Hello everyone

Just wondering if anyone has been on a health course run by self management UK?. I have just received details of a six week course from my GP surgery and would like to hear of anyone's experience of one, good or bad. What topics are covered?. Was it helpful?.

Hope your all as well as possible, looking forward to your great replies

Many thanks

Hi Barnclown

Thanks for your great reply. I'm going to ring them and find out about the venue and when etc. Thing is our GP surgery has said in the letter that they will find out from them if you've signed up as they will support you. I'm also thinking if you don't try it could affect your care with them!. It's a pity it's come soon after the one I've done for pain but I might be able to put name down for a future one, they say places are limited!. I will definitely report back if I go on it. I think you will understand my dilemma over it!. Hope your enjoying this bank Hol. X

Was this health m. course something you found or did your GP suggest it to you? XO

Hi Barnclown

This health course has come from my GP hence thinking it could affect care if I don't do it. They will find out who is on the course out of the patients they've asked as they want to support the ones doing it which is lovely. I think I'm deciding it's too much and as I'm getting ongoing pain support I could take up a place that someone else could benefit from whose never done one. A few years ago I did the expert patient one so think this is similar. Did you do that one?. Hope you enjoyed your excitement .X

No: I've been doing pretty much all this sort of work all my life via independent study 😂😂😂😂...i Know it works! and I'm fascinated by your experiences doing this via the health system...it's wonderful the NHS is dedicated to helping patients like us this way. Thanks SO MUCH for your updates 🌟🌟🌟🌟👏👏👏👏🍀🍀🍀😘😘😘😘

Hi Barnclown

You really have been so self motivated to help your health over the years. These courses are for people with multiple health problems to give them tools to manage their health better. The hope is to cut down on drugs and GP /hospital appt's and save money. They are very good and it's always good meeting people in a similar situation. I'm not sure I want to do another so soon after the pain one which gives ongoing support. Will let you know what I decide. Thanks for your valuable input . Take CareX

Yes, I was trained to do independentstudy at school...and this has stood me in good stead all my life, BUT it's a VERY lonely & isolated way to learn & practice self management + risky without really good professional guidance & monitoring. I WISH these sort of programmeshad been available to my generation...certainly I'd be participating in these programmesnow had I not got the hang of this over the decades...AND I LOVE the "refresher" I get when expert patients like you report to us re these programs....in effect, I feel as if I'm taking the courses with you 🌟🌟🌟🌟👍👍👍👍😘😘😘😘

I went on an 'expert patient' course some time ago. It was for 6 weeks and was very good. It covered mainly pacing oneself and having small targets - not pushing oneself to the limit. It also covered diet, but I have many allergies, so it wasn't of much use to me. It was interesting to meet others with health problems and how they manage them because in the end whatever the problem the ways of managing are often quite similar. They then wanted those on the course who felt able to train to take the course for others. I am not sure if your course is the same, but I suspect it is an updated version on what I attended.

Would be good to hear how you get on.

Hi Cann

Thank you for your great reply. I too did the Expert Patient one a few years ago and found it helpful. I think this could well be an updated version. It's certainly good to meet others in a similar situation, have done a pain course recently and have made two new friends. Not sure if I want to do another so soon but will update you all if I do. Hope your keeping well. X

I expect the pain course was interesting, too.

I have learnt so much about pain and why we feel it.

One reason I feel pain, I know, is because the body needs to draw my attention to something instead of being led by my head all the time. Breathing into the pain has helped me, too, instead of tensing up and actually making the pain worse.

I trained in natural healing mainly because my GP referred me to a channel when I was seriously ill and something extraordinary happened. This made me curious and helped me to reconnect to my body.

The reason I am saying this is because during healing sessions the patient can feel pain and this happens when the body is rebalancing itself, so there are many reasons for pain that we should not always suspect the worse.

Hi Cann

Interesting , different way you learn't about how we feel pain. I learn't that it's our brain's frontal cortex that's responsible for sending out pain signals sometimes wrongly!. When we're stressed this happens and sometimes these pain signals are sent out when there is no reason they should be. So, trick is to stop this happening by being in a less stressed state so similar to you we learn't breathing exercises and I do meditation mindfulness everyday with headspace and find it very helpful for coping!. I 'm a firm believer that we can always learn new things from these different courses!. One new piece of info could just be a breakthrough!. Hope your well and thanks for replying. X

Yes, the whole of life and beyond is certainly a learning experience - if we wish it to be! Hope you are well, too.
