Can I get some advice on oral care. I am getting persistent gingivitis. Brush teeth, floss and interdigital brush with dentyl mouth wash. Tried corsodyl. Not helped. Now trying tea tree oil and aloe toothpaste and wash. Still sore. Any ideas?

I worked in dental for 20 years and this article would benefit so many people on this site who don't understand oral hygiene.

I find oraldene mouthwash helpful not as harsh as corsodyl, but it sounds like you might need a trip to the dentist for some advice.

Hope you find the answer.

Last year my periodontist put me onto gengigel mouth wash & gel: these are helping me manage my persistent oral inflammation, monster lesions etc etc better than any OTC I've tried over the decades!

Good question, asarah 🌟👏🍀 coco

Is that a prescription or over the counter?.my question to you is do you get lesions on your tongue..l do and very painful

It's OTC....@ most good pharmacies.  I have 62 years of oral immune dysfunction & connective tissue probs.  I've conscientiously tried everything available from salt water to steroid inhalers.  And likewise re lifestyle management.  My lupus was infant onset.  My sjogrens was early onset.  I have severe erosive oral lesions inside my mouth and on my tongue and down my throat.  They are all highly painful and slow to heal.  It has been a big relief to discover Gengigel products: these do help my version of this.  I do get prescrition topical oral steroids too, which are the mainstay of my prescrition oral treatments, but conscientious oral hygiene and 3 monthly dental hygenist treatments are equally important.  It's hard to recommend treatments to others...we're all so different.  I tend to avoid generalisations on this subject

Am glad you've got helpful replies

Wishing you all the best

Thanks for replying!  HURRAH...the funny thing is that I recently found a bottle at RHS back of a bathroom shelf which I'd apparently bought several years ago before my lupus diagnosis was recovered and we finally began to find out that my life of awful oral monsters was mainly due to lupus...when I found this bottle I remembered I'd been too scared to actually use it cause the into leaflet made it sound like a quite serious & potent OTC: which fits...I needed that periodontist to instruct me to try it!  oh my gosh....what a funny coincidence!  So, what made you try it?

I had been having terrible mouth issues and someone recommended it on a coeliac site, also didn't realise it had anything to do with lupus and hadn't even made the connection until I read your reply, I was desperate for something that would work so gave it a try and was amazed!  So glad you mentioned it as I had forgotten all about it but have been suffering terribly with my mouth again for a while so thanks again I am just about to order a bottle now and looking forward to the relief it will bring!  Hate being so forgetful another reason why everyone here is a godsend in overcoming the problems!  Xoxo

Thanks: so interesting.  Current lupus diagnostic clinical criteria include oral/nasal lesions.  A suggestion: try gengigel gel: my periodontist told me to smear it on the worst bits after brushing & mouthwashing.  She also said to smear it all over before & after eating food with sharp/rough edges: chips, French sticks etc.  The gel is tricky to apply, but worth the effort once you get the hang of it! 🍀🍀🍀🍀

Yes, try toothpaste without fluoride.  Fluoride can affect people with thyroid problems.

id steer well clear of mouth washes as was all the good bacteria away also so leave you prone to infections! all the listerine crap etc do more hard than good gargle with salty water is good

I use coconut oil. Check out oils pulling. It calms my gums down straight away and I haven't had any problems since using it.

It's hard at first to hold coconut oil in your mouth at first and gargle it, but it gets easier. I do it when I'm showering. I sometimes add peppermint or tea tree oil for that extra freshness.

I urge you to visit a periodontist, they scrape it away.  I stopped the treatment some years ago, now much of my gum has disappeared, so I have been told.  My teeth are getting longer....so perhaps I am being turned into an old horse...eke!

A great mouth wash for various ailments is  just plain simple salt and baking soda dissolved in hot water, then watered down with cold....rinse out mouth, fantastically good.  It works for me with multiple issues also my granddaughter aged 10 with ulcers.

Thanks for all your replies. I stopped using fluoride toothpaste and am using tea tree oil/ aloe aloe dent instead. Things are much better. I used the oil pulling once too- this worked so quickly!
