Why are my hands and feet swelling?

I am having almost identical symptoms and it is wonderful to have them validated! For nearly 15 years I have suffered with severe fatigue and body rashes. Not one physician has ever appeared concerned, even though the swelling in one leg is severe and has been with me 15 years, despite a daily dose of lasix.

I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder of unknown origin, mimicking Lupus, but no physician has wanted to label me as a Lupus patient. I know your suffering, and it is indeed suffering! Just one of my symptoms is exactly as you describe: I am slender and have always been active. I exercise regularly. Each morning, upon waking, I have so much swelling in my hands and feet that it is difficult to take even a few steps. Even though I am continually using cream on my extremities, I have what feels like overly dry skin, but the creams do very little good. My feet have become so painful that my first few steps upon the waking are excruciating, and my hands are worse. The pain in my feet dissipates quickly, but the pain and swelling in my hands - never. It is my constant companion.

Does anyone have any idea as to what might be happening with my body? I also have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, and most recently non-hodgkins lymphoma (although I do not currently require treatment.

Hi plee,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been living with this symptom and you are not being supported by your consultant. Have you considered asking your GP to refer you to a different consultant for a second opinion?

Hi. I am the resident kidney obsessed person and tend to believe everyone's complaints require some kidney tests. There are a million reasons that could cause swelling. But it wouldn't hurt to get some kidney/creatinine pathology tests done. New specialist sounds like a good idea too !

Hi

Maybe you should ask to see a Rhumatologist regarding your Fibro. Both my sister & I have it, though I also have lupus. You have not said if you have any joint problems, but as you have already said that you have problems walking on a morning it sounds like you do and a Rhuematologist can carry out more tests. Unless you have the problems because of Odema, then I would also you do what Freckles1000 has suggested & have tests for your kidneys. If you do find out that you have lupus many of us have some form of kidney, heart or other organ involvement it seems to go hand in hand.

These are just a few suggestions to think about, what ever you decide to do, I hope that you get a better diagnosis & the correct treatment soon.
