Do you live in West Yorkshire? Volunteer to help educate the next generation of doctors.

Every year Leeds Medical School recruits volunteers to support their Chronic Illness and Disability Placement Scheme for first year medical students. The aim is to enable students to understand illness or disability from the view of an affected person and/or carer. The university pair two students with a volunteer and the students visit the volunteer to ask about their experiences of the condition, the type of contact they have with health services, and how the condition affects their lives and the lives of those close to them. Placement visits will happen in February 2016.

This is a brilliant opportunity to help make the next generation of doctors more aware of lupus and how it can affect patients and carers. LUPUS UK will receive a donation of £100 for helping to find volunteers.

If you would like to be a volunteer and you live in the West Yorkshire area, please email the University of Leeds at IandPY1@leeds.ac.uk by 4th December 2015.

Paul, I live in Lancashire. Worked in NHS 30 years, now find myself with Lupus. I would be willing to spend the day in Leeds if it help train more doctors in the complexities and multitudes of Lupus symptoms.

I think they are only looking for people living in West Yorkshire as it is generally the trainee doctors who travel to visit the patients. Feel free to contact them though, just in case they are flexible about this.

Hi LillyAlfie,

It may be worth contacting any universities that have a medical school near to you. They may have similar programmes.

Do we just mention that we found out about this via Lupus UK for the donation to be made?

Hi Diagnosed2012,

I don't believe that you need to state that you found out about it via us, but there is no harm in making sure.

Aha, the form they sent to gather more details has a space that asks where I found out about the scheme. I'll mention Lupus UK and check with the coordinator about donations.
