Has he also been diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome? This is another autoimmune condition that often overlaps with lupus and frequently causes a dry mouth.

Sometimes GPs are able to prescribe some special sugarless pastels that a person can suck to help promote saliva production. It may be worth asking about this.

I have been diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome which causes a dry mouth. My consultant suggested chewing sugar free chewing gum to produce more saliva. I never go out (winter too) without a bottle of water. I just seem to have continual sips.

My periodontist recommends Gengigel mouth wash & gel for the erosive ulcers, gum & roof of mouth inflammation that my sjogrens dry mouth causes. These OTC products are helping me hugely. But I do practice conscientious oral hygiene and see my dental hygienist every 3 months for my version of dry mouth. I find that making a strong pot of fresh ginger tea daily, which I use like a squash and sip 24/7, helps too. Avoiding caffeine & alcohol also makes a pos diff. I've tried biotene products, but they don't help me much. Also, artificial salivas haven't worked for me, although others benefit from them

I keep hydrated with small amounts of frequent nutritious liquids and foods.

It's worth asking for the saliva drops/pastilles, or getting some otc to try. Being a picky person I just didn't like them, and the effect doesn't last long. Advice from my dentist has been - together with the very frequent sipping - sugar free gum. I hardly actually chew it, but let it hang around in my mouth, especially when out and about, and it does help. For my eyes, I have regular drops from my optician, which help a great deal.
