Right. I'd had a troublesome right eye. By coincidence had my Diabetes screening and eye test. Could see nothing in eye. after two weeks of swabbing with saline, went to see a GP who was an experienced GP now working as a locum.
Explained problem. I said not conjuntivitis as I had that but not same. Not hayfever as ditto. Being a senior lady myself was impressed that she LISTENED. She took a swab of my eye in case infected, just in case but her swift diagnosis was ta dah, dry eyes. She prescribed me drops. When I got home I used the drops, it's a miracle. Not only did it clear my eyes but my distance improved as well.
I think it is Sjgorens. I have a long term dry mouth with sore mouth and tongue mouth ulcers and the rest.
This morning the reality kicked in.
I have used the drops since Friday but their benefit is wearing off, or else my eyes are much worse than I thought. If so, can the benefit's be wearing off, not last as long as first use?
The drops are Carbomer.
Has anyone experience of using them? What is your opinion?
Are there better ones out there?
I throw myself on your immense knowledge and help people.

I have unfortunately no experience of drops specifically called carbomer, and I haven't had a mo to research them, but, for what it's worth I can tell you something about my hospital eye clinic treatment plan for dry eyes due to autoimmune disease...I say 'for what it's worth' cause I don't have diabetes which may mean the prescription meds in my T.P. Are somewhat different etc etc
Anyway, here is what the NHS eye clinic has had me doing for several years for my version of SLE/sjogrens dry eye syndrome (I'm diagnosed with Punctate Keratoconjunctivitis Siccamand Meibomian gland dysfunction with mild blepharitis...& I have sjogrens dry mouth quite severely with awful predisposition to big erosive lesions and inflammation generally...I also have a periodontist treatment plan for all that....) & to monitor my eyes for side effects of prescription meds...hope something in this info can be useful to you and others...this Treatment Plan has helped my sad sad eyes enormously (I'd been suffering for almost 10 years with increasing dry eye symptoms before I was finally referred and given this TP):
2x per day for 2wks: 10 min + 5-10 massage strokes as per instructions leaflet
Then 1x per day
Artelac Nightime gel: available on NHS prescription, also available from amazon (replaced lacrilube which is my consultants least fav nighttime lubricant) use before bed forever: one drop each eye, in bottom lid
Hylo tear 10ml daytime eye lubricant: available on NHS prescription and avalable x amazon, 1 drop each eye 3x per day (there are several diff versions of hylo tear, prescription depends on the severity of individual case)
Plus my Drs have told me I can continue with this lifestyle stuff which helps my eyes as well as the rest of me, apparently:
anti inflammation diet
Anti inflammation supplements:
Vit D3 2000units daily
Omega Fish Oil 4000 mg daily
Vit C 2000mg daily
Turmeric complex 2 caps daily
Vit B complex 1 cap daily
Selenium 100 yg daily
Co-Q-10 100mg daily
Hoping something in there is useful to you...I've researched this subject over the years & my impression is that treatment plans like mine are fairly typical for people with my issues....but the trick is compliance & to get onto a regular hospital eye clinic monitoring schedule...my GP referred me initially....I had to argue my case persuasively...I'd think that any diabetic lupus patient would have a vvvvv strong case

Hi Footygirl I use the same drops for the same problem. Sometimes it needs one application and sometimes twenty it just depends on how dry your eyes are and for how long they are dry for. I have SLE and Sjogrens.
I agree with everything Barnclown says. Just to let you know if you don't keep your eyes lubricated you can develop ulcers, I had one in my left eye in May although I was always using the various eye lubricants.
I use Halo-Forte, Viscotears during the day and Lacri-lube at night along with the Viscotears. Every time I turn over I put some lubricant in my eyes during the night, if I don't I am in agony and I have to get up as it's so uncomfortable.
I too have Sjogrens so I chew gum during the day to help stimulate saliva and it helps to keep my breath fresh (dry mouth can cause bad breath).
I used to use carbomer but I found after time it stopped working I was put onto HYLO forte drops which are a lot better and preservative free which according to the eye clinic is better when you are using them all the time
The rheumatologist told me just to use sterile water drops for my eyes to keep them rinsed and to replace the natural tears. I've never heard of Carbomer so cant comment...
Thanks so much for your replies. I have had eye swab result which is infected. Hey ho. So now have to ask, dry eye or not, or both. We will see (no pun) on Wed what good GB says.
Are there any tests to make sure?
I have Lupus, Menieres, diabetes, AIHepatitis so think it likely to be Sjorgrens.
Still, won't jump the gun. Will wait to find out so not worry just yet.

Hey footy, I have same thing, dry eye, constant mouth and tongue ulcers (as a great 3 wks ago, my body decided to give me giant ulcers on my giant toncils lol), I also wake up at night with bone dry mouth and throat.
Have you had the eye test for Sjogrens yet? If not then Rheumy should do it, they put scratchy litmus paper in your eyes for 5 minutes and measure how much tears your eyes make, to check if It's Sjogrens.
They best drops that I've been given are LUMECARE Hypromellose.
Unfortunately when you use artificial tears drops, your eyes can rely on them and the drops can lose effectiveness.
There is another thing that can cause dry eyes and dry mouth, throat and ulcers and that is Amitriptyline, so if u happen to be taking that for pain, that could also be the culprit.
Thanks Claire thats great info. Unfortunately at the ENT apt, at last, to look into all that, was useless. His conclusion was ... dry mouth. He urged me to drink and ignored my telling him that I do all day up to 10 litres and that the problem was caused by dry mouth which I have had for about 10 yrs. waste of time.
Perhaps the first question should have alerted me. How old are you? After that his comments on exam were not correct. I know my larynx is deformed. He said, vocal chords all ok!
Not nice to be ignored when you are your own expert on your body. Thats three things which are evident but will not get treatment.
Hi Footy girl, I have very dry eyes at times like they're is grit in them, I used to think it was hair in my eyes but turns out it's an allergy in my eyes, I have to take drops to and they help a lot. They are by Visine. I've never actual thought about my eyes being this way because of the Lupas.
