my mum has lupus, every morning she wakes up with thick hard phlegm in her throat, any one knows why this is the case, and she has a post nasal drip . nothing can be done about that, she has had procedures done to help with it but it keeps coming back. she steams daily and at night. what can she do about the phlegm and has a bad cough that stays with her continuously.

Welcome to LUpus Patients Understanding & Support (LUPUS) at HealthUnlocked.

There is a small subset of patients with lupus who have problems with sinuses, slight wheezing and a nasal drip. Even though this is the case, the ear, nose and throat specialists are the people to see. I assume she has had recent chest x-rays etc

This is a very miserable condition to have.

We also have another website called the LuPUS Message Board where you can also post questions and talk to other people. Registration is FREE and we offer free information and free online psychological support. We specialise in psychological support with our own counsellor/psychotherapist available.

Sometimes we need to talk to people who understand and who are not family or friends.

I had horrible trouble with post nasal drip but being on amitriptyline helped so much. It hasn't completely gone but is very much improved. Just a small dose makes a difference.

Amitryptyline is an old tricyclic antidepressant that is used for a variety of reasons, rather than as an antidepressant. For example, it is good to reduce muscle spasms and aids restful sleep, which is why it should be taken at night.

I am glad this has helped you.

Be well!

Since I started planquenil I started a morning cough but I don't know if that's a coincidence. I had really cut down smoking, almost done and it went way back up

But I also had major pain hitting me this summer to for some reason.
