The first global study into the effects of passive smoking estimated it causes 600,000 respiratory deaths every year and one third of those killed are children who have been exposed to smoke at home. Every year 340,000 children try smoking for the first time. 14% of girls and 10% of boys regularly smoke. Smoking initiation is associated with parental and sibling smoking and by friends and peer group members. Are your kids breathing in your smoke? Children who live with parents or siblings who smoke are up to 3 times more likely to become smokers themselves. It is estimated that, each year young people who start smoking by the age of 15 do it as a result of exposure to smoking in the home.

Children show signs of addiction within four weeks of starting and smoking just one cigarette in early childhood doubled the chance of a teenager becoming a regular smoker by the age of 17.

Date set for tobacco display and vending machine bans in Scotland

The Scottish Government has set the date for the tobacco display and vending machine bans. These bans will help prevent young people from taking up smoking. The ban is on the open display of tobacco products in shops and self-service tobacco vending machines. It will be introduced on the 29th of April 2013.
