Palliative Pain Management Team

My mum had to have an mri yesterday, she's currently an inpatient in hospital after being reduced to tears due to severe pain in her lower back.

We've had it confirmed that her Neuroendocrine cancer (lung and liver) has spread more Mets to her spine and pelvic area.

She is to undergo radiotherapy treatment tomorrow at this stage I don't know how many treatments she's supposed to have but she has been referred to the Palliative Pain Management Team to discuss her pain treatment going forward.

The Dr who discussed some parts with me advised that when discharged from hospital she will be seen by the community and they will assist and monitor her pain etc.

Going forward they can assist with hospice care.

Nothing can ever prepare you from seeing a loved one go through this.

Bloody cancer 😠 I detest you.

So very sorry to hear about your Mum's recent results. Hopefully the radiotherapy will reduce the pain. The palliative care team are great in their expertise and will ensure your Mum is comfortable. It can be overwhelming when all the care is planned out, while you are still getting to grips with the results.

It is such a suffering for yourself and the family, if you wish to discuss anything you are welcome to call us on our free nurse led helpline on 0800 358 7200

Kindest regards

I have 2 parents with cancer one with Mets everywhere who did radiation for sacral fractures for pain and one who just finished 9 sessions. With my dad , he couldn't walk he had sacral fractures caused by the Mets throughout bones. Two weeks post radiation he was able to didtch the percoset he hated. My mom's doc has her in emergency radiation for spine tumors and low dose fentanyl because she had surgery to walk. It's very chaotic depending on personality and attitude of patient so rest assured pain will subside and I have seen radiation help so many. I wish you love luck and blessings

Thanks for your response. I don't know how your coping with both parents going through he'll with cancer.

It's been a rollercoaster since she was diagnosed last October and we've had a couple of highs when we were told the tumours were reacting to the chemotherapy and shown signs of shrinkage.

To find out yesterday that she has Mets in her spine and pelvic area has knocked me for six.

She's like a shadow of her former self.

I'm devasted and dreading the next few months.

We're not sure how many radiotherapy treatments she is having but as long as it kills off some of the cells and helps with the pain it will be a big help.

But they did inform me that a person can only have so many treatments.

Your in my thoughts and prayers x

How I'm coping..I cry, I breathe, iefiate, I research, I enjoy small moments. My dad is the greatest ..my mom is difficult and refuses so much but she is far more advanced than your mom. Had surgery to walk, still can't. Ten days of radiation ending tomorrow. Oh usually it is ten radiation treatment to start was for both parents.

Expect ten treatments Mon to Friday and if emergency like my mom then sat. I found out on Easter so her surgery and all of this has happened so fast I feel insane

She was so strong, but she is thin frail weak, should have been dx so long ago. It's terrifying, the wheelchairs, the whole scene, so try to smile at every person in cancer hospital even the garbage men.

My mom since on fentanyl patch and inability to walk is very confused and frustrated and afraid. As a daughter, my advice is follow mom's lead and avoid talking about treatments and how patient feels all of the time. If she wants to talk about it she will. Share small joys..I know I haven't been experiencing many as my life is in disarray at the moment, but there are always small moments. From everything some good shall come. I repeat this to myself daily. Kit.
