Help and Support with cancer anxiety (Mom)

Hello everyone I am 21 years old, my reason for this post is because I wanna see if anyone has similar or stories thay could help me during these tough times. My mom is 43 and she was diagnosed with an encapsulated cancer tumor 6 years ago. She did not do anything about it since she was dealing with kidney removal surgery at the time. Currently on Dyalisis as well. The tumor didnt seem to bother her at all for those six years. She did not even proceed to surgery because she was weak due to her kidney treatments and had her two small children (now 8 and 11) and me, and my dad of course.

Well on my graduation day which was May, my mom went into the shower and when she came out she could not stop coughing blood and her nose was bleeding, her chest sounded so bad and she could not breathe. It was scary. She went to emergencies and was sent back home. Then two days later went again and was diagnosed with bronchitis. Then at her dyalisis it got so bad she would throw up clots of blood, in which she was diagnosed with pneumonia at the new hospital. She was weak and on oxygen. But the doctor wanted to dismiss her until the oncologist noticed her records indicated a tumor before so she sent her for a bronchoscopy.

The night prior me and my siblings went to see her, and she was so weak and could barely breather but she continued to smile. I ate with her and she hugged all of us. It felt odd. That next morning she had the bronchoscopy and immediately was sent to ICU. My dad called us and told us to see her in case of anything because she was bad.

As the week went by, my mother was intubated and sedated while receiving dyalisis. It was alot on her. It was painful seeing my dad, and my little siblings seeing her in pain. The tumor was biopsed and said to be cancerous but treatable. The bleeding did not seem to stop so every day there was less hope. Also surgery was too risky for her.

A week after she was finally taken to a new hospital and had a thoracotomy. I had said goodbye to her because it all was too risky. But my mom is a warrior and did it. Even receiving dyalisis after surgery. They took off the lower lobe and she stayed there( ICU) for another 10 days. Through her delirium and pain she was finally out. Now she has been home for a month and doing amazing despite her dyalisis. She does her everyday activities and I cannot thank God enough for this miracle.

I now live in anxiety though, because I am scared of losing her. We have an appointment with the oncologist this week and I am scared of the surgery results. Losing my mom is something I never want, and with her dyalisis in the line this would just be too much. If she needs treatment. Anyone has gonenthrough the surgery? And do you follow up with the oncologist? I called and she said she didnt need to see me yet, she said in a month. Now the time has come and I am so scared of knowing about the cancer. Would the doctors have seen it before during her stay? I just need help because I constantly cry and just hug her everyday. I cannot stay away because I love her so much. Sorry for long post.

Thanks!

When your mom had surgery they would have tested the lymph nodes surrounding the tumor. If they had found anything in them they would have canceled the lobectomy. Right now her tumor is out for analysis to see how aggressive it is and if it is they will recommend chemo.

From what you’ve written your mom is made of sturdier stuff than her doctors thought. That will carry her well. It may be that they got it all and she may well be cancer free for now.

Sending hope for the best possible clinical outcome.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I am really hoping for the best outcome as well, appointment is on Friday so we will see what happens. Best regards!!

If she has lung cancer, they need to test the tissue for genomic markers to know exactly which kind of cancer so they can recommend the best course of treatment. You will find many patients and survivors here treated with immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and or radiation of various kinds depending on those mutational drivers. Don’t let your anxiety keep you from asking questions of the oncology office over the phone prior to your appointment. There is more hope for those of us with lung cancer today than ever before. I have been living with stage 4 nonsmallcell lung cancer since April 2015, raising three children and living a high quality of life. Best regards

sounds as if this has been a very scary journey and also that your mum has no intention of leaving you yet! I had a lobectomy in Dec 2010 (I was 52) and was back at work/swimming 3 months later. In the last few years i've become involved in cancer research and met lung cancer survivors who had treatment (surgery and some who had radiotherapy/chemotherapy) of 20+ years. I didn't have chemotherapy after surgery as the evidence was that it didn't work/offer benefit for my specific type. They now test lung cancers in a very detailed way as there are different agents from when I had my surgery. My consultant was my surgeon (as I didn't have chemo) so didn't have an oncologist (in the Uk they are the ones who deal with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and immunotherapy). There is some really useful information on Roy Castle lung cancer website under 'information' lung cancer treatment, 'surgery' 'my lung surgery' booklet that details milestones, treatment and suggested questions. good luck.

Your Mom is showing everyone how strong she is and you are certainly a very loving daughter. This week, you will be getting lots of new information from your Mom’s medical team. Please keep in mind that if you want a second opinion in regards to your Mom’s care you should get it. As already stated, getting the tumor tested with NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) is key in making informed decisions.

Please check in and let us know how you are doing.

I can’t comment on the cancer. I had part of my lung removed in November. Turned out it was not cancer. Long story.

I am just sending you hugs and prayers. Your Mom is a warrior as you say. You have some of that in you as well. We all need to take each day as it comes and appreciate the time we have. Cancer or no cancer, life is too short to waste it worrying.

Your Mom sounds like one strong lady and she is lucky to have such a strong, caring daughter like you. In the words of a 15 year lung cancer survivor whose posts I have read elsewhere, stay the course. Sending prayers and hugs your way...
