A lung cancer diagnosis can trigger a range of emotions. These emotions are important to discuss, but it can be difficult to find people who understand. Finding the right support is a vital step in many people’s lung cancer journeys.

Over the past few months, HealthUnlocked has been conducting research on the Lung Cancer Support Community. This is to learn more about the emotional impacts of a diagnosis on an individual and the ways that people reach out to find information, support and ways of coping. We’ve created a 4 part video series in which people with lung cancer discuss these topics in their own words. These videos have been shared in this community over the past 4 weeks. Today is the last part of the series and centers around the emotional impact of a lung cancer diagnosis and how people find support.

Part 4: Emotional Response

66% of the individuals surveyed reported not feeling adequately supported when dealing with the emotions of their diagnosis. Additionally, many felt the stigma attached to a diagnosis could be a barrier to discussing the grief they are experiencing.

Make sure you are sharing your feelings and concerns with those you feel comfortable doing so, whether that be your family, friends, doctors, religious figures or your online community. Good support is paramount and something everyone deserves.
