Advice please...

Morning all! Could anyone tell me if it's OK to leave my compression socks off just for 1 day? My legs feel as though they need a little rest....I wear them every day and my legs and ankles are beautifully slim....and I sit with them raised all day. I'd just like a rest for 1 single day.....

Thanks.....the reason is my daughter’s little dog ripped 2 lovely wounds on my shin bone. He was just sooo excited to see me, and my skin’s like paper anyway. Now the dressing’s been removed I’m trying hard not to disturb the large scabs that remain. I’m wearing a tubigrip at night and I thought if I could only leave my stockings off for just 1 day I could let the air get to my legs. So thanks, I’ll give it a go.....👍🙋🏻‍♀️

Let me know how it goes for you.

I think you’d be fine for a few days just see how you feel. Hope your wound gets better soon.

I don't think 1 day free from compression will result in any lasting damage. Probably best to go easy though . Listen to your body; you'll soon know if you'd rather have your stocking on.

I wear a flat knit stocking plus toe caps and my affected leg is about 10% bigger than my normal leg. I left my stocking off for about 24h, albeit I wore my toe caps with a compression anklet as my foot really needs to stay compressed. By the end my affected leg was about 12% bigger than my normal leg; status quo was established shortly after I wore my stocking again.

Can you explain what toe caps are & what an anklet is? my left foot & leg are definitely larger than the right 1. Difficulty putting shoes on!

Here is a link for an anklet very similar to mine: shop.lrselfcare.co.uk/produ...

Link for the toe caps I wear: juzo.com/en-uk/products/com...

What are toe caps? I wear toeless knee length flat knit compression stockings but often beyond the end of the stockings my feet and toes are swollen. So would be very interested to see if the caps would be any good for me.

Toe caps are a bit like gloves only for your toes/forefoot. Like any compression garment they come in different sizes, compression strength, off the shelf or custom made. I have seamless toe caps from Juzo which I wear with an open toe stocking; they work very well for me: juzo.com/en-uk/products/com...

Thanks everyone.....I really appreciate all your replies.....this is how it’s looking today. No longer infected after Fluclox but it feels like there are ants crawling all over it! 😯

My leg.

Sue - that does not look good. How long were you on Flucloxicillin? Think you may need to get back to the doc.As a therapist (now retired) I can't tell you how many people I have seen over the years who have suffered infection following a 'cheerful greeting' from a doggy friend. Please ask dog owners to get their pups trained to not jump up!

If the dog was excited and did this to you, I would get your tetanus updated. The dog also needs training not to jump otherwise this could happen again. Looking at the wounds in your leg it looks like you have been left with two holes, so these wounds are possibly painful and open to infection. If you skin takes a while to heal you may have to leave compression off for more than a few days, You should also have an anti-microbial skin wash such as Dermol. So if I were you, I'd get myself a doctors appointment to fix this all up. ASAP.

Yep. Tetanus is up to date.....and Vinnie, the dog, has been really well trained, he was just over excited to see me. I was actually sitting down at the time it happened but he escaped my daughter’s clutches and ran straight to me.The scabs are actually the flaps of skin that Vinnie tore so I’m not sure if they’re viable, but I don’t want to disturb them till they literally drop off.....

My lymphoedema nurse has given me an antiseptic/antimicrobial wash for my legs so I think I’m ok for now......🙋‍♀️

Yes a day is fine, see how it looks the next morning (as swelling goes down when sleeping), and then judge whether you can have another day off.

Fluclox 500mg....1 x4 daily for 7 days. I’ve taken them numerous times for skin infections. They do work but they really make me nauseous and gives me 💩💩💩 I’m not 1 for taking antibiotics if not necessary. My GP is still not doing face to face appts, and even trying to get a phone consultation is nigh on impossible. But I will deffo keep my eye on it.....🙋‍♀️

Still no face-to-face appointments, its a damned disgrace how some surgeries are failing to provide a decent service and it does not matter how often they tell you, "you can have a telephone appointment," it is not the same. And this is despite the fact that we are trying to get back to sort of normality. Guess its normality for some but not for all.

An infection of that severity warrants a minimum of 14 days antibiotics. If flucloxicillin affects you that way, they need to investigate a different product. The Lymphoedema Support Network have a leaflet outlining different drug regimes for cellulitis.

So pleased a nurse has arranged for a microbial wash product. I hope you are on the mend.

Yes, I leave them off at times. My problem is that my feet & legs feel wet under the compression stockings. I know now that what I'm feeling is on the inside of my legs, not the outside. Still, it's an icky feeling!
