Chemotherapy and lymphoedema

Hi there,

I just wondered if anyone has any experience of how lymphoedema reacts when having chemotherapy? I have Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and they have decided I need to start chemotherapy in about 3 weeks time. I also have primary lymphoedema (the 2 conditions are not related - just unlucky!) in all 4 limbs and my head. The consultant at St George's says that the lymphoedema swelling will be worse during treatment but I'd be really interested to hear anybody's experience of this and how long the lymphoedema takes to get back to normal after treatment.

This is a very 'how long is a piece of string' situation. Every individual reacts differently. Much depends on how you are currently managing your lymphoedema. At St George's they have an excellent team of lymphoedema therapists, so if you want to get advice from them, just ask.

My suggestion would be to see if your oncologist will speak to your lymphoedema specialist about it. You are a special case and should be entitled to get as clear a picture as possible. There may be something that can be done to limit any increase in swelling.
