Hi,

I think I have lymphedema following cancer surgery nearly 3 months ago, I have been referred to a specialist on the NHS, who has taught me some basic techniques, but because I was only a couple of months post op, and the swelling could - and still could be post op swelling (its in the pelvic area-so was the surgery) they cannot officially diagnose me yet. I wanted to find someone who could do MLD, and maybe answer more of my questions, and maybe be a bit more precise, but how do I find someone? and what qualifications should they hold, so I know they are authorised? and when should I give up hope that its just post op swelling?

thank you

ps why does the internet advise against ice packs, it seems to be the thing that helps take the swelling down a bit at the end of the day?

Hi bobblehat (lovely name!) - to find an MLD practitioner, look here - mlduk.org.uk/therapists/ - you need to select someone with DLT after their name, which means they are fully qualified. All the MLDUK therapists have done accredited training.

As for ice packs. You need to avoid 'extremes' such as intense cold and high heat (so heat pads should be avoided - in cold weather!) as this increases the lymph supply in the immediate area of surgery. If the surgery has interrupted the lymph flow, then the new lymph has no where to go, and the swelling can get worse. MLD is the right way to go, and is very relaxing as a post-operative treatment, which all helps with the convalescence and repair. It may well still be post-operative oedema - MLD will help alleviate this.

Thank you so much!

i'm still hopeful, but its fading fast, as the weeks roll on! I will try the MLD, and hopefully this will help either way. :)

Hi bobblehat,

Just seen your post, from a month ago - hope you are improving. Have you seen the LSN video/dvd material ? I found the advice / demonstration really helpful for self-managing my left leg swelling. I felt it was worth the money.

Take care !
