Coffee

My step dad read an article that said coffee helped with depression and insisted for me to try it and when I had a small cup yesterday it started making me feel weird. Now these anxious feelings are coming back. I’m getting hot flashes & I hate it. Any suggestions? I have been taking 10mg of Lexapro & 50mg of Hydroxyzine when needed & it’s still not helping.

You should definitely stay away from coffee! I heard it isn’t good for persons with depression & anxiety.

Caffeine in coffee is the worst thing for anxiety.

I drink decaf I have for years. No problems. Wonder where he heard that? Tell him it’s a no no. Must people know it’s bad for anxiety.

One of the first things a person is asked in a psychological assessment is do you drink alcohol or caffeine.

Caffeine is a stimulant so acts in a way that makes us hyper-aware. It also sounds like you don't usually drink coffee so Im guessing that for you even a small cup packed a particularly hefty punch.

The effect of the caffeine wears off after a while however the spiral of worry caused by that initial 'weird' feeling can continue on.

Are you feeling any better now ?

I think it can be quite calming to just understand what is making us feel the way we feel. Although I know its never that easy.

Hope you feel better soon ... and kick the coffee to the curb :)
