Introducing myself

Hi, I'm Iain and I've just recently changed to a new Dr due to changing address. As he wasn't my family Dr, I felt I could maybe be more open with him and gave him a handwritten letter I had written on my first appointment giving him an idea of how I was REALLY feeling (something I couldn't do with my previous Dr who I'd been with for about 30 yrs). That was pretty much the first time I'd heard of social anxiety and things began to fall into place regarding mood swings and terrible rage and anger that only seemed bearable with alcohol or drugs. Even Misophonia which I'd never heard of caused a eureka moment when I remembered in my childhood kicking my sister under the dinner table in a boiling rage because the poor thing was scraping her fork on her teeth (sorry Ann)

That's about it, but hopefully 51 years of anger will be under control soon as I'm on a waiting list for CBT. I'm interested in following this community for any hints or tips or maybe even help someone else if I can

Thanks Iain

Hello & Welcome Iain1967 :-)

Thank you for your introduction as it helps a lot to know a little bit about members so we perhaps know the best way we can help :-)

Sorry you have been suffering so long , I know the feeling but sounds like having to find a new Doctor has been a blessing because you have been able to at last open up and ask for the help you need and I hope the cbt does that for you :-)

Talking about how you feel can be a huge help to and let me reassure you even if we don't always have the answers we are good and listening and we do understand as we have either been there or going through it ourselves and no one judges anyone on here so you are in safe company :-)

We are a small Community compared to some but in a way can be an advantage as we can get to know one another a little bit more :-)

I hope you will feel part of the Community , free to post and any support you can offer will be more than welcomed :-)

Take Care x

Hello Iain welcome to this community nice to have you join us

I'm so glad that you now have some answers and CBT lined up Your new doctor sounds like he is going to be very understanding and caring

I had never heard of misophonia so have just googled it I feel mildly like that with some things and can see how you lashed out at your sister I can imagine that sound and feeling you must have had with the fork Had that been my sister and being a child I think she would have got a thump from me 😉

I am a huge huge fan of Dr Claire Weekes her books have been my salvation over the years I have found her a huge comfort She says that no matter how long you have suffered you can and will get better if you follow her advice I can really recommend her Her books are available on Amazon also the DARE response by Barry McDonagh is excellent

Also mindfulness I have been on two courses it's been wonderful really changed the way I think and cope with things Mindfulness a practical guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World by Mark Williams and Danny Penman is wonderful it has an 8 week very pleasant plan and a cd with meditation exercises There are also videos on YouTube

I've recently joined a stress and anxiety group that meet once a week and that has been great It's run by MIND so you may have one locally That would probably be very good for your social anxiety as there is absolutely no pressure at all to speak or join in but because everyone is suffering in some way it's like being with friends and no one will judge and I definitely feel like joining in which I would normally find nerve-racking

Really glad that things are falling into place and I'm sure the CBT is going to be brilliant for you

Wishing you all the very best as Lulu says this is a small community but it's very friendly and it's feels like a little family everyone is positive and upbeat despite having problems

I hope you will enjoy and benefit from being part of it with us 😊
