FBC Results Question

Hi, I had a FBC done this week, in which all the cell lines appeared to within range, however as this was done privately I had also asked for a Blood film to be done, this was reported as 'neutrophils show left shift' on looking into this it implies that left shift means more immature neutrophils than normal are seen on the film, which normally suggests some kind of infection, however my White Cell count was not raised which I would have thought it would have been if I had an infection ( obviously I am not aware either of any infection ) I have not been diagnosed with Leukaemia but am fearful I may have it ( wont go into details here as to why ) so going back to my question, I am wondering if the 'left shift neutrophils may be due to my bone marrow releasing immature neutrophils due to the fact it can not accommodate any more mature cells as its full of leukaemia cells. I have been suffering bone pain for a number of months which is a symptom of leukaemia ( hence one of of concerns ) it suggests bone pain occurs due to crowding within the bone marrow of leukemic blood cells, which in turn forces immature cells into blood stream.

I have also noticed for the last 3 months I am suffering tinnitus ( not sure if this is connected but as one of the causes of tinnitus is blood flow related am concerned it may be connected.

I would appreciate anyone who has experienced of knowledge of the above to respond.

Thanks Al

Hi Al,

I think you can be confident that you do not have leukaemia despite the bone pain and left shift neutrophils. Everyone who is normal has a few left shift neutrophils and there is nothing of significance with this. Even when a bone marrow is full of leukaemia cells it is unusual to see a left shift.

You do seem to have anxiety about this and to really give you peace of mind you need to speak to your doctor about the results as they can reassure you properly.

I hope you get to the root cause of your bone pain

Hi Redcollector, I was wondering if you could update us on what your tests with your doctor found out. I have some of the same symptoms and am working with my doctor to figure it out / diagnose it asap. thanks!

Hi, well following a regime of blood tests all of which have appeared normal. I have come to the conclusion that the left shift was not significant. Not sure if that helps you. But that’s where I am at the moment.
