This is a pilot event and we plan to role these out with RCGP across different regions to raise awareness of people presenting with blood cancers, reduce emergency diagnosis and raise awareness of on-going holistic care needs.
Topics:
1) Diagnosis and influence on outcomes in the modern era - Dr Salim Shafeek, Clinical Director Haematology and Oncology, Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust & Dr Manos Nikolousis, Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Director, Heartlands Hospital, Heart of England Foundation Trust. Early sessions will set the scene outlining epidemiology; classification of disease type, the varied presentations with case vignettes – while discussing the local and national burden of the diseases on patients and the NHS.
2) Clinical care in practice – doctor/patient communication during diagnosis, establishing an action plan and on-going holistic care - Dr Ben Kennedy, Consultant Haematologist, University of Leicester. What communication tools can a healthcare professional develop to use his/her clinical skills most effectively and successfully acknowledge a patient’s concerns? What is the balance when it comes to efficient use of limited diagnostic resource? What are the communication issues around, under and over investigation? What does an early diagnosis look and feel like for both the GP and the patient?
3) The Patient’s perspective - Kris Griffin, Leukaemia CARE Trustee and Patient Expert. A local experience, during diagnosis and living with a blood cancer, reliance and relationships with primary care, holistic needs and challenges.
