In the latest of our user health stories, Simone talks about weight loss with a disability.

Simone is a member of the Weight Loss NHS community on HealthUnlocked. She has reduced mobility due to a disability that was a result of her mother taking the drug Thalidomide when she was pregnant with her. This can make losing weight more difficult. Simone has been overweight since the age of nine and has managed to lose weight despite limitations in terms of mobility and exercise. Simone has focused on healthy eating and exercise, having successfully lost 4.5 stone (28kg) over five years.

Keep away from refined sugars found in processed foods, look for a natural sugar substitute like Xylitol or stevia if you can. Sugars lead to lots of problems; health, obesity and even death.

‘Diet” foods or “low fat” foods are to be avoided at all costs as they don’t do what they say on the tin.

I agree I lost 2.5 stone on low carb one of the best things I've ever done, feel tonnes better :-)

Well done to you Rachel.

When I was little I had a terrible sugar-filled diet, drunk lots of fizzy drinks (including diet coke which contains aspartame) and rarely ate any fruit or veg. It was that time of my life when I had to endure a bout of operations due to neurological problems. I originally had a brain tumour in 1996. I then had a second in 1998.

When growing up I did slowly come off of the fizzy drinks and my mum could see all the colour had come back to me. I used to be pasty white (due to the enormous amounts of sugar). I’ve read more into herbal medication and I have loads more faith in nature now. The way I see it, pharmacies are out there for money, they don’t care about the people.

I feel much better now that I have a reasonably better diet :).

Hi Matt, I'm new here, and just reading your post. Sorry to see you have had a lot of difficulties in life. But it seems that you have now found something that works for you. I agree about the pharma companies, as I'm on lots of medication I don't like taking, but for some of my health conditions i have too. If i could afford it, i would go to a herbalist. Enjoyed reading your story.
