I've been suffering with depression for almost 20 years and whilst I won't go into the details now, it has caused major thoughts and plans of suicide. With the support of friends, I've finally decided to go back to the doctors to seek some help. The only problem is (living in the UK), that I know i'm going to have CBT thrown at me. Now, whilst I know it has worked for other people, it just doesn't seem to do anything for me... I've been through the course of treatments twice and whilst I've really tried to make it work, I just can't seem to follow through on the counselling. Am I wrong in not wanting to try (and fail) again. Are there any other treatments available on the NHS? I just wish I knew...

I did CBT and it made me worse made me realise how bad I was. I told them this and they sent me on a 12 week mood and depression course which was better but I was still suffering I then went on to a mindfulness course where they do meditation, this was better all these courses were on the NHS. I also had my meds changed and after this saw a psychiatrist for counselling which I pay for at £90 per session but you can find them cheaper. He has helped me much more than any of the courses and I have been drug free for a year now as they was not really helping me in the end. It's something that Is always going to be part of me. Ask if there's anything more than the CBT or search on the internet for what's available in your area. Good Luck x

CBT did not work for me either, although to be fair I only did a few sessions before realising I needed someone to talk to i.e. counselling. Two other treatments to consider are NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and Hypnotherapy. Both are available at a discount rate from Anxiety UK if you become a member and you won't have to wait long either.

I'm starting mindfulness-based CBT shortly. I think NLP is very good.
