should i?

My almost 3 year old was diagnosed with itp about 2 months ago. we have been watchful waiting as his counts were only at 42, 000. He has many bruises (about 8) on his legs, and 3-4 on his trunk and a few petechia. Should i be worried and bring him in to be seen and get a blood count? I should include the my oldest also had itp as a child and he only had bruising on his legs when we brought him in and he was at a count of 4,000.

Children some times develop immune thrombocytopenia after a serious infection/illness that overwhelms the immune system causing the body to attack itself. I have haven’t read of a generic connection but research is ongoing and I may have missed it. Is your child being treated by a hematologist, what treatment is he receiving? Children tend to respond better to treatment than adults, there are currently several children ranging from 18 months to 13 years of age on this site.

This site has an excellent educational section you will find helpful. I was diagnosed with ITP in early 1990’s Welcome to our community:)

No treatment. Just watchful waiting

It may be acute ITP, not chronic

ITP

This mean it is possible your child give his full health after some months and never back ITP .

So you must see a hematologist and check his CBC for platelets during this months.

Hi echodomin

You could also check to see if he has any blood blisters in his mouth. I don’t get many symptoms until my count is under 10 and that is the thing that usually makes me go to get it checked.

But the short answer is if you’re concerned that the count may be low then go and get him checked over. Always better to be safe and it will ease your mind.

It must be really difficult to have to put your little boy through it, but I definitely think it’s worth getting a blood count done. I’m on watchful waiting too and any sign of bleeding in the mouth makes my haematologist a bit concerned. It’s a strong indication for me that my platelets are really low (usually around 5).

Let us know how you get on

We got a cbc done. It was 75,000. Not normal but 10,000 more then last time. So we will take it. Hopefully it just steadily going up.

That’s good to hear. My consultant would be really happy with any count above 50 so 75 is good news. Fingers crossed that this is a sign that he is going to recover completely from the acute form of ITP (as many children do).
