What amount is anyone taking daily. I have read that one tablespoon two or three times a day is recommended on the bottle. Anyone had success with a smaller quantity?

Hi there, I almost went into production of papaya leaf extract out of frustration with the low quality stuff thats out there. ALL clinical trials when its effective involve the extract of the fresh leaf - usually 5ml to 15ml twice a day which is roughly the extract of two or three mid mature leafs (the leafs are big and can be around 65g each approx). If you do plan to take it then you can see my thinking around producing it below. If you're wondering why I'm referring to dengue below then its because its primary problem is the lowering of the platelets (like in ITP). Papaya leaf boosts platelets and can prevent dengue from killing people VERY quickly - usually a turnaround is seen in a few days. I studied medicine (only getting half way with it and have maintained a keen interest in health, I made and consumed papaya leaf extract when recently in Thailand which is in the midst of the worst Dengue outbreak for around 40 years).

PLANNED PRODUCTION METHOD AND NOTES

Fresh Organic Papaya Leaf Extract preserved in 95% proof alcohol. This is as close as you can get to the fresh leaf. To extract I'm using a professional stainless wheatgrass juicer and pharmaceutical grade 95% prof alcohol. To produce 1.5 litres I use the following:

750ml of 95% proof alcohol

750ml of fresh papaya leaf (10kg of fresh papaya leaf that is processed through a commercial wheatgrass juicer to give approximately 750ml of dark green extract - 750ml of fresh extract is equivalent to 750,000mg of fresh extract - 1ml is 1000mg).

The alcohol can be easily removed if needed prior to consumption with leaving a few teaspoons of the extract in a glass of warm water. Grain alcohol is the preferred preservative as it results in a product with 5+ year shelf life. Also it results in an extremely concentrated and easily transported formulation.

The juicer I use is:

nutrifaster.com/optifresh-i...

The resulting alcohol based extract has many uses and can be stored for 5 years and will retain almost full potency for that period.

Shipping will be via an global express shipping method (tracking possible and arrives in most destinations within 7 working days).

How you use it is up to you ;)

Notes about strength and potency:

I use a stainless steel commercial wheatgrass juicer which takes 10kg of fresh leaf and grinds the leaves to extract 750ml (1ml = 1000mg) of fresh extract (approx 10:1 extract). To buy 750g (750,000mg) of extract in the US currently costs around $1380.

Currently the leading supplier is herbalpapaya.com where you can see that they sell the equivalent of 384,000mg (384g) of extract for $690 (12 bottles, each bottle contains 32,000mg of papaya extract) (herbalpapaya.com/collection....

Each bottle ONLY has 32,000mg of extract (the extract of around 2 full leaves)! which means that the other 422g of fluid in each bottle is just glycerin and water. This also means that my product is extremely compact at only 1.5kg. The equivalent amount is contained in 24x 16oz bottles which would weigh around 12kg.

Given that people with dengue take around 15000mg (1 tablespoon of fresh extract) to 75,000mg (5 tablespoon of fresh extract) a day of the fresh extract you can see that taking a decent dosage is pretty important. I take around 5ml a day as a preventative measure - one teaspoon morning and evening (one teaspoon = 5ml = 2.5g of fresh extract + 2.5 ml grain alcohol). Which means that 750,000mg of extract will last 150 days if I use this much per day.

Wow, what a reply - wasn't expecting anything like that. I just purchased one bottle of Herbal Papaya. The cost is why I wrote the post. I am going to start with one teaspoon twice a day. Due for another blood test July 1st so I will get an idea fairly quickly. Will increase further if needed. So far I have been very fortunate. Platelets dropped to 36,000 in February but have stabilized in the range of 55,000-66,000. Also, have tried a wide range of supplements - Vitamin C, Vitamin K1, Folic Acid, Beet Root, Vitamin D, Iron, Vitamin B-12. Hematologist said he was okay with all of the above as long as it was done in moderation. Initially I was diagnosed with ITP but after a bone marrow biopsy diagnosis was changed to Idiopathic Cytopenia of Undetermined Signifance. Fairly good news but still fighting an issue of fatigue - also 69 years old and most people this old take an afternoon nap anyway.

Hi majorindy, the I in ITP stands for “idiopathic “ which means “ of undetermined cause. Cytopnia is definite as a reduction in the number of mature blood cells. Low red blood cell count: resulting in “anemia” Low white blood cells count: is “leukopenia” or “neutropenia”. Low platelet count: is “thrombocytopenia “ thus, ITP means “low platelet count of undetermined cause”. If your platelets are 36 thousands, you have ITP with fatigue, bruising and depression. My platelets range from 30 to 80 thousands. What treatments are you receiving? Keep in touch and be well:) kyriak51

Hi David, kyriak51 here I have ITP. You say you studied medicine what does that mean, two years of medical school, did you drop out due to your ITP? Could you send me links to “clinical trials “ or hematology \ oncology literature citations? How long have had ITP, what treatments are you on, what is your platelet count range.?

I was diagnosed in early 1990 started treatment in 2009, failed standard treatment with platelets 6k-10K until I was started on Nplate (romiplostim) at 1mcg/kg with positive results; eight years later I’m stable on 650mcg weekly injections to maintain a count of 50-80k. Are you saying your Papaya leaf extract would have kept me alive and stable for eight years if so you should publish your findings in the journal “Blood”. Looking forward to your reply:)

This is not meant to be critical - I'm just posting this for clarity as papaya leaf is often deemed ineffective. In terms of doses heres what you'll be taking compared with what people in asia typically take when using as a home remedy for dengue (and also whats been clinically studied)

1 tsp = 5ml. Each bottle of Herbal Papaya contains the extract of two leafs. Theres about 80 teaspoons in each bottle. So you'll be consuming something like 1/40th of a leaf twice a day. Typically when people have dengue they would be taking 80 or 100 times more than that twice a day.

How much have your platelets increased?

Padram profile image

Hi, I have been taking papaya leaf tablets for more than a year now. Initially the count increased, albeit slowly, to 100,000. However, of late it has started dropping. I also have the tendency to bleed even at 40k. At present my count is 30k, and I have a lot of gum bleeding. What I have now found out is that papaya leaf interacts with warfarin, a blood thinning drug. People taking warfarin should be cautious when they take papaya leaf extract or juice, for reducing blood sugar, as papaya leaf extract or juice , also reduces blood sugar. webmed site says papaya leaf extract or juice can cause bruising and bleeding .

I now feel that papaya leaf which increases the platelet count may be good only for dengue, wherein the production declines and patients are advised to take papaya leaf extract or juice for just 5 days.

Papaya leaf extract or juice increases the production of platelets. It will not stop the destruction of platelets by the immune system.

As far as ITP is concerned, we have to be cautious . My experience of one year with this extract could be an eye opener. Or maybe it would be of great help in those who don't bleed as easily as I do.

kyriak51here: There’s NO scientific to support the claim that Papaya leaf extract increases platelet production!!!!! Please read Anthony Heard’s post regarding Papaya leaf extract. Mr. Heard is the administrator of this ITP support group. Please don’t waste your money on fake supplements:)

Thank you for your reply. Wasn't aware of only taking it for five days. Started taking it yesterday and plan to go for a blood test this Friday. It will be interesting to see the results.

There is absolutely NO scientific evidence whatsoever that Papaya Leaf Extract has any lasting positive effect on the Platelet count. If you are considering taking Papaya Leaf Extract please consult your ITP specialist or doctor before doing anything at all. Taking remedies like Papaya Leaf Extract or any other alternative treatments may actually do more harm than good. Such remedies are NOT regulated at all and NO evidence is recorded of any side effects that may be caused by them. The ITP Support Association absolutely does not endorse taking Papaya Leaf Extract and the medical panel of some of the leading experts in ITP who advise the ITP Support Association confirm that it is nothing but wishful thinking to suggest that Papaya Leaf Extract would help. Realistically if it were that simple then the leading World experts in ITP would already have endorsed it .

Anthony Heard (Site Director) responded to my post. He said there is NO scientific evidence supporting the fact that papaya leaf works. My hematologist told me that a lot of this information comes from manufacturers trying to get people to purchase their product with nothing to back up their claims. Several other people responded to my post saying they had a short term increase in platelets then returned to their previous level. You can also look at pdsa.org (Platlet Disorder Support Association). Go to their menu and it has a section about vitamins and supplements. They advise considering Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin D, and Folic Acid. Besides the above I also take Vitamin B-12 and Iron tablets. My hematologist was okay with me taking what I mentioned as long as it was in moderation. At the present time my platelets have remained stable in the 55,000-65,000 range. My most recent diagnosis is Idiopathic Cytopenia of Undtermined Signifance. Kind of on a wait and see schedule but have another appointment the end of July with a specialist to shed more light on this issue.
