My Soul Mate is fighting for his life!

My husband was admitted on November 1, with covid pneumonia. On November 10, he was intebated and put on vent on high sedation. They struggled weaning him because he bucked the vent. His lungs began to fill with blood clots, so we agreed to try an aggressive approach and use blood thinners. On December 11 he had a heart attack, but was revived before two minutes. He began to get better and was finally trached on December 27. They also put in a peg tube on December 30. By January 1, began to wean him from sedation. Now 13 days later he is not waking up? They did a CT scan which showed no bleeding, stroke or damage? I just got the news today that his EEG taken 7 days after stopping sedation showed minimal brain function and doctor said she does not think he will wake up? Since she didn't seem to know that he had been on sedation for 47 days , she agreed to do another EEG in two weeks. They also started him on a wake up drug?

Has anyone seen a problem like this?

Hi @lynnmarr and welcome.

It would appear that many who have had Covid suffer the complications that your husband is experiencing.

This link is a short article about this peculiar trait of Covid.

My husband took weeks to wake up from induced coma - he was in hospital with covid last April. Head CT was clear but he was “unresponsive” to stimuli. The doctors also told me they did not know if he would wake up. But he did , very very slowly. He is now home and doing well in rehab after over 120 days in hospital. He also had blood thinners in hospital.

Lynn,

What is the update with your husband? My mother has been off sedation going on two weeks now and she has been able to open her eyes but doesn’t make eye contact and may follow a simple command every once in a while. She turns her head toward your voice but doesn’t seem to be in there 😔

My husband also is taking time to wake up. He seems more alert, but not responding either? I have been praying for him to get out of this fog! I still have hope! Since they don't allow visitors I purchased an iPad and the nurses turn it on. I talk, read and play music for him for 4 hours every evening because I read it helps. The hospital just informed me that I can visit on Tuesday and Thursday's for one hour. I plan on using light massage and smell to help bring him around.

Praise Jesus you can visit him! They are allowing my dad to visit once a week right now and I got to see my mom three times last week when I can into town to visit. She was only opening her eyes at the time but now is following simple commands and is tracking with her eyes now. We also set up a radio to be playing K Love 24/7 and have family pictures and a big picture of my daughter for her to see.

We all just need to keep praying and take it one day at a time for our loved ones. As hard as it is that is all we can do right now.
