He spent 12 days on a ventilator and an additional 19 days in ICU and step down ICU. Then he was in rehab for 34 days getting Physical, Occupational and Speech / Cognitive Therapy.
I’m a little nervous to see him again in person. For more than 2 months I’ve only been able to talk to my dad a few times on FaceTime or his cell phone. He’s come a long way and he has a long way still to go. He will be continuing his therapy at home. We hired a caregiver to live with him temporarily since he still has issues with mobility and cognition. He will have a visiting nurse come to the house several times a week. My siblings and I will take turns staying with him also.
I’m so glad I found this site. Even from far away in the US, everyone has helped me to not feel so alone during a truly awful time. My family prays each night that everyone who is sick and separated from their families will soon be together again. 🙏🏻 I’ll try to keep everyone posted on my dad’s progress. XX

He is getting there slowly, he is now walking with a frame,they are trying sticks this week. He is exhausted after the 1 hour physio he is getting . And still in immense pain with his feet . Please let us know how you dad is getting on .
My father just started having pain in his feet as well. Last night he had shooting foot pain that kept him awake for hours. My sister held ice packs to his feet to try to relieve it. Do they know what is the cause of your husband’s pain?
Hi, we are getting different theories, circulation or damage to his nerve endings . When he is doing his physio the pain subsides . However his feet are still swollen . The local GP doesn't seem to know very much, I asked him will it get better, he just said it could be permanent . We have a follow up call next week with the hospital. I'm hoping his pain subsides as it's really draining for him.
Thank you for responding! We are thinking he may have had a flare up of gout. I guess he had gout in rehab and was given meds for it. He has a visiting nurse coming either Thursday or Friday so hopefully we can get some clarity. I also hope your husband’s pain subsides soon. Just a couple hours of pain at night completely exhausted my dad. xx
Thank you, hopefully it calms down soon,they have been through so much already. Has your dad had gout previously ? Hopefully the nurse gets him the meds and it kicks in quickly. Yes they are already fatigued, they need every hour of sleep .
That's brilliant news I'm so pleased for you and your family. I'm sure now that he will be in familiar surroundings the healing process will be much faster.
Thank you! He was happy to be home! We wanted to keep things quiet and low key since we knew he would be tired and a little overwhelmed. Unfortunately his girlfriend came in like a whirlwind, playing loud music, keeping him up late talking and then waking everyone up at 5:30am. She is going back to her home today and hopefully dad can have a rest.

I believe that I improved because I did my best to keep up with simple exercise that I had been given my critical care physios. I also did things in the day which were mentally stimulating - “ do one thing each day that requires thought & concentration”.
It’s about doing a little each day but not overdoing it because you’ll be back at step 1
this is such amazing news, i’m so happy for you & your father. being at home will be strange for him at first, remember it’s not only 2+ months away from the normal world but there have been huge changes regarding COVID that will take some adjusting to get used to. he will still be the father you knew & continue to love, just be patient with him and take each day at a time 💛
Thank you! We had a nice visit the other day with a lot of smiles and laughing. He does seem to be more anxious, which is very understandable after everything he’s been through. I’m hoping to talk to his doctor about it.
absolutely understandable - talking to a doctor will not only ease his anxiety about coming home but it’ll also tool you & your family with how to support him on bad days. it’s a learning experience for you all, but one that is better tackled as a team which i’m sure you’re doing 💪🏻💛
