My husband is still sedated and on the tracheostomy. His oxygen level is still 35% and he requires the ventilator. It has been 5 weeks now since he is in icu and no progress and I am worried.

My dad is six weeks and the same , tracheotomy and oxygen 28 % . He does have a weaning and physio plan in place but it’s a slow process the longer they have been on ventilators I gather .

Dads been awake nearly two weeks now and it’s responding to us on FaceTime and knows what we are saying nodding ect .

Today and yesterday the nurse said he is agitated and now not sleeping much , said this is because he doesn’t really understand why he can’t talk and understand how I’ll he is and frustrated.

Hang in there it’s so hard not seeing much progress I feel the same it’s draining xx

Have they told you plans around lifting sedation?

35% is very low so that is great, are they weaning on the ventilator?

My dad has been in over 5 weeks and was off sedation and weaning ventilator but yesterday got very tired and oxygen requirements went up so he was ventilated again and put back on some sedation, it's a long process so I'm trying to stay postive and patient even though it's so tough x

They did lift the sedation last week but then had to put him back on sedation this week as he remains on 35% because he is so weak. It's not easy at all.

Oh bless him, he probably just needs time to build up his strength?

Stay strong x

That's what the doctor said today that he will take a long time to recover.

When my mum was at 35% oxygen the Doctor seemed really confident she would pull through and she was still sedated. Shes been re-sedated many times, but they were more confident at 35%/40% oxygen.

Thank you and how is she now? My husband has 2 infections and is on antibiotic

in reply to Rgsable

Unfortunately mum got a second infection but straightaway her oxygen increased so now we have to wait for it to come down again. Shes been ventilated 4 weeks. She has previously had a VRE infection to this which she managed pretty well.

My dad had Tracheostomy was starting to wake and oxygen was 30% then today the trach leaked and they had to remove it and sedate him again. They will try again in few days.

It’s such a rollercoaster! One step forwards, half a step back all the time. Hopefully second will be successful to get him back on track x

My Dad was in ICU for 6 weeks with double pneumonia and was ventilated 4 times but now he is in rehab ward and doing great. Your husband is in the best place and receiving care from highly skilled staff. It is a long process and he is maybe just needing a bit longer with the sedation and trach.

How is your dad rehabilitation going so far?

Can i ask when your dad was ventilated again, did they put him back on sedation and paralysing agents. Dad's issue seems to be his lungs are very damaged and scarred and oxygen requirements not managing to get lower than 45% (today has been bad and between 50-65%)

It can be incredibly slow progress. My husband has been 6.5 weeks now on a ventilator, about half that with a tracheotomy. His oxygen is also around 35% which is fine and it took around 10 days for him to fully come around from sedation. They are given some very strong sedatives and paralysing drugs as well as potentially morphine. Only once all these were stopped my husband woke. He will be weeks yet being weaned but they need to be more awake to do more of the breathing for themselves. X

Hi how is he now? I’m in exactly the same position my husband is between 35-40% oxygen on a tracheostomy and still sedated. Forgive me his only been in icu for one week but everyday they try and get him off sedation but he gets agitated I’m going mad people don’t know what it’s like to be in this situation when it’s not happened to them x
