Day 10 In an induced coma no improvements or hasnt got worse with acute pneumonia. Oxygen level up and down and back to 50%, Been stable since day 1 and in light sedation. The Doc said they cant reduce the sedation untill the tube are out and thats only if the oxygen level start going down.

All organ are still working fine.

As hard as it is to thinking of it like this.. no change is a good thing! Your loved one is just fighting the virus and is doing a great job of it ❤️ I have faith

The doc seems to think he is critical and that he could get worse

I’m so sorry this is happening. It’s so difficult but prepare yourself for this rollercoaster to go on for sometime. I was told to wear a mental health crash helmet and that it likes a journey across a large ocean in a tiny boat with storms, big waves and no idea when you are going to reach land or what the destination will be. It’s a very accurate analogy. They will be critical whilst on a ventilator and in ICU. Their oxygen levels will go up and down and kidneys probably won’t work until recovered. It could take weeks and weeks. Once it gets to around 3 weeks they will probably do a tracheotomy which makes them more comfortable and they can reduce sedation further. They make improve quicker than that and not need one, many do. But many take a lot lot longer and even after awake are critical until weaned. My husband has been on a ventilator for almost 5 weeks, it’s a slow process and just awful for us at home waiting without anything we can do. I have found I have to give myself one task to do each day. Keeping everything crossed for you and your family x

I’m so sorry about your Mum, hope she has been able to continue with treatment. My Dad has advanced stomach cancer so to have two things to worry about is horrendous. Cruel times, wishing you and your Mum all the best x

It’s so difficult not to worry but the fact he’s not worsening is a great sign!

My dad was ventilated for almost 3 weeks. In thag time his oxygen went up and down constantly. He had kidney dialysis, problems with the rhythm of his heart, high blood pressure. All things that threw spanner’s in the works. But then all of a sudden they got the oxygen down and it stayed down. And he is now extubated, awake, talking and recovering (albeit very very slowly!) but he is alive!!

Please don’t give up hope!! Have they been putting him in the prone position? And has he been able to join any of the medical trials?

DAY 12 update: still stable but seems like lungs are abit worse today and little infection around the heart. Dont know what that means exactly but worrying

Keep in mind there is a difference to be drawn in a patient being critical and a patient being stable.

A patient may be critical, but stable.

Stable is the good thing here.

A patient who's condition may not be critical (yet), but is unstable, usually presents a more difficult challenge to manage.

Priority is to get the patient stable, once stable, managing underlying conditions becomes less difficult.

Many a critical, but stable patient, pulls through.
