Day 13 help

Hi please could some one help me . My hubby had a liver transplant two weeks ago and still they can’t bring him round . He’s had a few infections and been heavily sedated. Every time they tried to bring him round he got very agitated. He’s now just on Dexmedetomidine and still staring into space . I’m so so worried .

Regards

Debbie

I know a few people who had trouble coming round from ICU I did myself but not from the transplant, I was put in an induced coma and everytime they tried waking me up I was not responding in the best way it took 3/4 weeks and a couple more after that to even realise what had happened .... Fingers crossed he won't take as long x

Hi Debski,

My dad needed almost 5 weeks to be awake properly. 7 to be totally aware! The body needs time to heal and recover. He was 20 days in an induced coma. That's a lot of time. He had two terrible infections that almost killed him (the worst by far was the pneumonia, that he got in the hospital). During this 5 weeks he opened his eyes so many times... but staring into space just like you say. Doctors said he might have brain damage. The body is not a machine that can be turned off and on... it takes time. Some people need less, some need more. You need now to be very patient and have faith that everything has it's time and everything happens when it has to happen. :) he's now fighting a battle and he's strong and will make It. Just be there to make him strong and you'll see he'll make it.

My dad is eating and talking already. He's still in the hospital. Today he makes 3 months in there.

Give him time. Bless you!

Thank you for your story as my hubby in 3 wks out of induced coma and not "awake". Docs automatically say must be brain damage though there is no test proof. I know its possible but its also possible its not. ❤

Hi Debski,

It took my dad just over two weeks to even begin responding and waking from his coma - they reduced the sedation after the first two days that he was in the coma but he would get so agitated that being out of sedation was dangerous for him and his vitals. He also had a heart attack whilst in the coma so had to be re-sedated. They tried all kinds of medication to 'wean off' the effects of the sedation, including one that was very expensive, but none of them worked or helped my dad come around in a less agitated way! He was completely out of it, and he would switch between either being very agitated and trying to pull out tubes (he had to wear these big mittens) and get out of bed, to just looking completely dejected and staring into space and not responding to anything. He has now been out of the hospital for 5 months and is doing great; as soon as the sedation and confusion wore off, he was mentally back to being himself, but this took a good month or so to happen. I know it's so hard but please try not to worry, try to focus on the fact that even if he is agitated he is still coming round and waking up and that is so important - he will return back to himself, but his body has been under so much stress and fighting so much, as well as having loads of drugs pumped into it that cause confusion. Some people in the ICU came around after only a day or two of the sedation being removed, and I would get so worried and frustrated that dad was taking much longer. But he needed that rest, and I'm sure it's the same with your husband.

Keeping you in my thoughts and hoping he comes around soon for you! xx

I refer to this article almost daily. Its very encouraging about "waking up" from induced coma. I hope this helps you. My hubby is on wk 3 today and physically i see great improvement, vitals strong, just got off the vent but still not following commands. I get your fear and frustration. ❤
