Be Encouraged

I’m writing to encourage anyone losing hope. As I write this, my dad has been hospitalized for 25 days, but he’s on the road to recovery from Legionnaire’s disease (legionella pneumonia). He had most of the pneumonia fatality factors - compromised immune system, over 50 yrs old, diabetic, transplant recipient. The pneumonia was so aggressive he went from a cough w/ flu symptoms and shortness of breath to life support within 72 hrs. None of his doctors thought he would survive. They told us he was closer to death than life and palliative care told us to prepare for the worst. He was in an induced coma, intubated on 100% ventilator support, his body went into septic shock and his organs were shutting down including his transplanted kidney. Every day we watched him laying there hooked up to so many tubes and machines. BUT...day by day his chest scans and blood work looked a little better. Day by day he was breathing a little more on his own. Eventually he was breathing well enough to be awakened and taken off the ventilator. 6 days later he was walking around his hospital room (w/ assistance) and talking with family and friends. He’s now in rehab. His mind is still sharp, he’s regaining strength daily and his kidney started working again. Please be encouraged, the body has an amazing capacity for healing. No matter how grim the outlook may seem don’t give up. There is hope.

What a lovely positive post I so enjoyed reading it. I am 64 and had 7 days in ICU with a brush with death! Like your dad I bounced back! It is miraculous how bodies can repair seemingly quickly. I'm on my 6th month so well on the way to recovery. I hope your dad continues to be strong and positive.
