My sister isn’t waking up.

My sister has been a quadriplegic for 3.5 years. She is dependent on a ventilator but she is always up and alert when we are speaking to her. Two days ago the long term facility she has been in called us to let us know that her blood pressure was dangerously low and they sent her to the hospital. Since she’s been in the ER she has not opened her eyes. The doctor admitted her into ICU and is treating her for septic shock. She is usually very alert and attentive. I’ve been calling her name and she has not woken up. In 3 days. She is on 2 blood pressure meds and lots of fluid and antibiotics. Last night her heart rate increased a lot and they had to put her on heart meds as well. She is on no sedation meds or was she ever in any. She takes ambien every night to go to sleep. Please help me make sense of this. I am so scared i really just want her to wake up. I miss my sister already.

Hi Mj29. I can only say be strong for your sister. My dad was in septic shock ... and wasn't alert for more than 3 days because of high temperature and was very weak... he was on ventilator support as well. Stay positive!

Hi Mj29, I was in a coma for two months with septic shock and multiple organ failure - whilst your sister is still alive, there is always hope. They were starting to ‘turn off the lights’ because they thought I hadn’t a chance of surviving. 22 months later, life is pretty normal.
