Did any of you suffer double vision after icu?

Hi Paula, yes I had double vision after a 2 month stay in ICU (and an additional 4 months in acute care followed by 2 months in rehab). The double vision was very fast occurring cataracts in both eyes caused by drugs given whilst in ICU for antibiotic resistant blood infections (VRE, MRSA and pseudomonas). I had double Intraocular lens implants and my sight is good now.

My health - 5 years later - is good and I've been fortunate not to have any emotional/mental after affects. I was probably fortunate in being sent to rehabilitation where I learnt to walk again, when I left rehab was walking with the help of one stick but was able to stop using this after a few weeks. My balance was slightly affected for a couple of years - things like balancing on one foot, closing my eyes or walking down an incline or stairs made me a little unsteady however I felt better not relying on a walking stick. Oh and I had to learn how to get up after a fall - attended a 4 week (one hour once a week) "falls" group this was excellent as you could practice getting up in a safe environment.

For bathing I used a shower chair and another lifesaver was a "bed stick" this enabled me to independently get out of bed - this was a MAJOR step forward. I found that folks who worked in aged care had the most knowledge of these aids. Believe it or not whilst I was in acute care the physiotherapist and occupational therapist didn't suggest a bed stick, it was only when I went to rehab that a senior nurse suggested it. Would have saved me a couple of months of needing 3 people to help me get out of bed!

Because I'm in Australia am not aware of the situation in the UK but here you are assessed before leaving hospital and the occupational therapist visits your home to check you are able to access doors, showers etc. they then provide any aids free for a month and then on a low rate loan for as long as required.

I hope things work out for your family - at one point it seemed like I'd be stuck on my back unable to move ever again but now I am back to traveling full time by myself in my RV - you can do it!

Oh, also meant to say that I had help with cleaning the house, the occupational therapist arranged this, also had daily visits from district nursing to change dressings etc. you might find this is available to you, especially with young children. Don't be afraid to ask for help and NEVER down play how difficult things will be for you when speaking with medical and allied health professionals
