I converted to Fragmin from Warfarin, about 4 months ago, to see if it reduced the number of 'funny turns' I was getting; which Prof Hughes feels are TIAs. I have also converted before when I have needed surgery.
I have had a couple of blood tests, since I converted, to check kidney and liver functions and potassium levels, which can rise whilst on Heparin.
The dose of Fragmin is calculated on body weight and the scale for this is in the notes that come with each box of injections.
I find giving myself a Fragmin shot in the morning is much less of a fuss than having to do INR self test, which I had to do daily, and take Warfarin. I can now eat and drink what I like, more or less, rather than having to be careful about Vitamin K rich foods, or keeping my alcohol intake constant. Fragmin works in a different way to Warfarin and does not change a person's INR level, whatsoever.
Fragmin has reduced the number of 'funny turns' that I get dramatically but I still sometimes get clusters of them.
FYI Just to let everyone know that the FRAGMIN program is NO LONGER accepting new applicants for their free/reduced program. I just rec'd their letter. We should ask one of the other makers. If we send MANY pleas from us - maybe they will offer a program too.
