Does having APS cause it to take a long time to get over illnesses or heal from minor cuts or injuries? I've been ill with sinus issues for over a month, even with antibiotics and steroid nasal spray. Starting to get better now, but never had it take this long before.

Now that I am on a full strength aspirin, I take twice as long to heal. The injuries seem to ooze rather than seal off quickly, but they do eventually heal.

Hello, I had constant sinus infections in-fact, I had them so often I didn't even know it because having one became the normal. Not until I had lower and upper sinus surgery did I finally get a break. And yes recovery seems to take longer.

I've noticed since 2009 that any recovery from surgeries or illness takes much longer than it should.

It might be worth having your white cells, lymphocytes and neutrophiles tested. If they are low, like mine you can get a lot more infections and take longer to recover.

Whether APLS lowers them or not I don't know. It might perhaps be the Plaquenil as well.

I have a heamotologist investigating this for me at the moment.

Tassie if your neutrophils are low (mine are) what would they do if anything; how would they treat that? Thank you.

Depends what is causing it. In our case it might just be our bodies attacking the neutrophils.

here is an article that gives some causes and possible treatments:

I find everything takes an age to clear up and have just put this down to autoimmune disease now. I too have recurrent problems with sinuses (probably due to my Sjogrens Syndrome) and the doctor has prescribed me the steroid spray on repeat and has told me to take it continually to stay on top of the problem (must admit I don't as I don't like to be on steroids all the time). The problem is not so much infection, although of course that can be an issue for some people, but more a case of inflammation setting in and not getting better. I do find that the sinus problems do take a few weeks to get under control again. I also use a humidifier to help with the dryness which aggravates the sinus passages.

Hi had same problem rheumatologist wrote to go to refer me to Ent.

They put little camera up nose hit lump.

Large deviated septum stopping me breathing properly and causing sinus blockages infections plus my lymphocytes were to low.for me took me off azathioprine due to this.had surgery December still infection slow heal but now getting better.

Allergic rhinitis adding to problems plus lupus causing body make sinuses inflammed.then causing blockage.

So Ent given me long term spray sinus rinse.

Making difference gp repeating my spray.

If I don't use sinus rinse start get headaches pain face blockage.

The rinse is available buy online not prescribed only by hospital.

So if you've not seen Ent I'd suggest asking Gp.

Deviated septum is so common ent told me up to 70% born with it in uk. But only 10% have bad enough to need surgery.

I was getting faint a lot dizzy in state infection over year half on off.

Hope helpful.

Yes it takes time to heal, but worth it in the end. Also my ENT advised me that I could still get sinus infections up to 6 months after surgery. He was exactly correct about that. I also had to have the upper sinus surgery as well and that was worth it too. I've had just a couple sinus infections since surgeries which is much better than constant infections.

Hi Windlesss

When you went through Setum surgery did you stop taking blood thinners or anti platelets? If yes, when prior to surgery?

Thanks in advance

I agree. It's just this is the first time I've had sinus issues since being diagnosed with APS. I was just wondering if it's the reason it's lingering so long.

Perhaps you got the wrong antibiotics.

Here in Sweden we can read in our biggest Newspaper today about "the danger with resistente bacterias " and what will happen in the future. How our autoantibodies react on this I do not know.

I was beginning to think that as well. I am better today. I used to get over these things in a week or so, not a month.

I am getting older and maybe that is a contributing factor as well. I was wondering if maybe it could be because I have APS.

YES! Have APS and have sinus infections and/or bronchitis frequently. Found out in 2015 I also have CVID, an immune deficiency I was born with but only diagnosed when I was 65. Have to take gamma globulin infusions every four weeks. Nancy

Good luck.
