Hello everyone. Did anyone ever had an operation while diagnosed HS? Did you get medication like heparin or aspirin? I am Dutch and curious about how this works in your country. Because i'm worried about a surgery next week.
In 2008 I was diagnosed with HS (because of a stillbirth). I've never had a thrombosis and therefore no medications (only during pregnancy). I should tell the doctor about my HS in case I need an operation. So I did, i've told it to the doctor and anasthesiologist about my HS. But the doctor and the anesthesiologist are totally unfamiliar with HS. And have not and will not take any actions!
Now I wonder, do i need blood thinners or anticoagulation (hope google translate did translate those medical words well :-)) after or before surgery?
The operation will takes about two hours and takes place under narcosis. After there's no need to stay long in bed.
I'm worried because the knowledge of the doctors about this subject isn't good. Can anyone tell me about standard medical procedure in other country? Thnx.

Als het hebben van een algehele narcose normaal iets geroepen overbruggen moet plaatsvinden. Anderen hier, hebben zowel beheerders en leden ervaring van beide gehad. Ook kunt u hier zien, is er een Nederlandse naam op de lijst, kunt u meer gedetailleerde informatie te krijgen om veilig te zijn en goed over uw procedure te voelen. Mary F x
Hello, it is good that you are asking these question about your surgery which will take place shortly. There is a different set of rules usually between a general anaesthetic and a local anaesthetic. If having a general anaesthetic normally something called bridging needs to take place. Others on here, both Administrators and members have had experience of both. I was on Warfarin and had to have heart surgery. I stopped the Warfarin one week before surgery and started Heparin injections. I restarted Warfarin on the day after surgery and kept the Heparin going too until my INR was back in range.

When I had my baby by c-s (post diagnosis), I had heparin twice a day leading up to the operation. During the op I had inflatable "wellies" and wore surgical stockings. Afterwards I re-started the heparin.
Since then for a period I wasn't on regular anti-coagulants but was always given stockings and heparin post-op. Hopefully no more ops for me, I've had too many as it is!
Jippie- I have had 2 surgeries and oral surgery - both times protocol of 3 to 5 days prior , off warfarin , procedure done , back to warfarin with overlap with lovenox accept 1 st one i stayed on lovenox for 7 to 9 weeks so my S and C proteins could be tested . i was an 80 % risk factor with my 1 st surgery which was a core decompression of right hip. ------jet here in U.S.A.
My hip replacement is in 1 week and I am following the protocol mentioned by others here. Today was my last warfarin, then in 2 days I start lovanox injections. There will be a pause in the lovanox for the surgery, then back on lovanox while my INR goes up again after warfarin is resumed.
I'm certainly anxious about the surgery, and about the possibility of clots, but my hip socket is deforming. As my GP pointed out after the last X Ray, " it's no longer IF you have the surgery but WHEN and under which circumstances. Either the surgery will be planned, or it will be an emergency procedure which will follow a fall and a hip dislocation. Your chances of walking and hiking again are much better with the first, planned option.
Sigh. So, we're both looking down that same road. I'll cheer for you as I cheer for myself.
Since my diagnosis, I've had open heart surgery, gall bladder removed, ovarian cyst removal and my tubes tied, each time I go off of my Coumadin 5 days prior to the surgery/procedure. I switch over to Lovenox injections instead for anti-coagulation. The night/day before the procedure, I hold all anticoagulants. I usually restart with both Lovenox and Coumadin (takes a few days for Coumadin to kick in) in the evening of the day I had the procedure. I keep this duo of meds until I test in my desired INR zone, then I stop the injections. Please feel free to ask me any questions. I techinically have never clotted. I had a complication during my first attempt at heart surgery. I got nicked in the carotid artery and had weird bleeding. After a hematology work up, I was diagnose with antiphospholipid syndrome.
I've had several minor operations under local anaesthetic since I started on lifelong Warfarin folllowing DVT. In all cases I've stopped Warfarin five days before, gone onto heparin and then back onto both until my INR has stabilised. All quite straightforward and without problems.
