When you were diagnosed with HIV, were you given any written information?

In 1983 Nobody had anything to write, they still thought it was caused by poppers and you were expected to be dead within a year.

i was given a lot of written information but i put them all in the bin because i was worried that if anyone saw them at home they would know I was diagnosed. Also it was a lot and at that time none of it made sense, i would have preferred to speak to another person living with HIV. eventually after some months i was able to start reading them

No not right away. When my obgyn called to confirm that I was indeed pregnant with twins her last things was. "Oh by the way, you have the Hiv virus" and over the phone.

I figured and assumed that with information that serious and mind blowing for anyone that they would have you come in and talk privately, behind doors. Nope not I.

It was 1983 and the only test was the western bloc which took three months and only showed antibodies. The doctor told me and my mother that I would be dead within two years. He did say he was sorry but that was it, I was ask to leave after that. Back then it was GRID not HIV and the fear and stigma was extreme. I'm glad those days are gone.
