Plant sterols (or stanols for me!) can't completely replace simvastatin because sterols inhibit absorption while statins inhibit HMG-CoA. If you take more sterols than the 2.4g limit, I suspect the effect will start to tail off and you're going beyond what's been advised.

In terms of effect, 2.4g of sterols typically offers 10% reduction while 10mg simvastatin typically offers 25% reduction, according to cks.nice.org.uk/hypercholes...

Plant sterols lower cholesterol but they haven't been shown to reduce heart disease risk. Statins have other effects than cholesterol lowering - they are anti inflammatory and anti coagulant. A lot of people think that the cholesterol lowering effects of statins aren't the reason they reduce heart disease risk, but that the anti inflammatory and anti coagulant effects are more important.

I am type 2 diabetic, managed on diet only for over 15 years but now take metformin twice a day and also 10mg of statins.

Turmeric root which I make into a paste is a very potent inflammatory supplement. It is so good for many things and there have been many newspaper articles of late, about it potency.

Yes, there are also plenty of other things that are anti inflammatory and anti coagulant. Omega 3 fats for example.

What are your cholesterol numbers?

Do you do blood test (HbA1C)? , what is the number?

Do you do yearly eye test?

Do you go for foot checks?

Weight, height, age and other factors.

There are some Asian stuff that can help. Metih (Fenugreek) leaf cooked, it is bitter but excellent, cinnamon boiling and drinking the water in the evening.

Fenugreek powder, cinnamon powder and Turmeric powder in porridge for breakfast, very good.

Total cut down on sugar, hidden sugar in food and free sugar in food, this is very difficult, it can be achieved.

Have been able to control HbA1C number over the last four years by food alone, only time will tell, may be one day I may need medication.
