Hi, it would help to increase your intake of magnesium, you can do this by eating leafy green vegetables and nuts, or take a magnesium supplement (discuss taking a supplement with your GP first if you have any existing heart disease)

Are you talking about leg cramp?

Yes in my calf

From my experience, some time the bedding can be heavy during leg movement. It is imperative that you discuss this with your GP and go for blood tests. Drink plenty of water and eat bananas.

You could also try magnesium in your bath, very old fashioned but may help. You can also buy magnesium as a spray. Be careful if taking it orally as too much can cause a certain 'looseness'.

The only thing that helps me is quinine tablets prescribed by my GP

I`m gonna see him tomorrow

My mother always has tonic water by her bed. She says the quinine helps.

Thanks for that Jill. I got some spray from the chemist and it seems to be working

I am sure your GP will help enormously. GPs are usually quite excellent, as are all doctors in the NHS, and can quickly reach a diagnosis and effect a cure.

I have also experienced this cramping year after year, also comes on so quickly, ie. as soon as I turned in bed, the leg would go into cramp. Magnesium works a charm and also keep body hydrated with water. This has worked for me, but takes time to take effect. You need to take this on an ongoing basis, currently I am taking 1000mg daily (2 tablets) and have been on it for two years or so and works a charm. Quinine tablets are also effective, however, the magnesium route is in all probability the better way to go. As we all have our own experience, we will always recommend you run this through your doctor as not sure what else you are taking. There is relief you just need to find the best for you.

Did you do blood test for both magnesium and potassium?

No I did not have blood tests done as I felt there was no need to - my mother suffered from bad cramps, so I guess that's where I probably get it from, and she used to ask for Quinine tabs, for me, it is magnesium, as I am of the knowledge that magnesium is the least understood vitamin and also probably the least used and I did the research. It is essential for muscles and of course the heart falls into that category. You need to action something as those cramps are really painful and leave the leg muscle quite sore for a while and many of those attacks cant be any good for the muscle, so there is no harm in getting onto magnesium straight away, and as said plenty of water. This is what this site is for, to help each other after all we are the ones on the ground doing the research and reading advise from other which is really useful.
