Maybe for some people, what I don't like is the willy nilly prescribing to all and sundry without the 'known' side effects being explained. And phrases like "everyone over 50 should be prescribed statins" which I have heard and read. Statins alter every cell in the body, that can't be good.....surely more natural alternatives should be explored first...but then there is not the same huge financial benefits for the few!! I wonder where the Daily Mail article originated??? Would anyone be surprised to learn that it came from a drug company?? And don't forget that many doctors saw the pharmaceutical band wagon years ago and jumped on it buying shares. How cynical am I?? Sounds like I may have seen both sides!!

Yes usual stuff but I normally enjoy reading Dr.Scurr's column. But to suggest that 'between 2 and 5 per cent of recipients get muscle aches' makes the excrutiating pain and discomfort I have experienced from Pravastatin, Atorvastatin and Simvastatin seem totally insignificant! How can I do the recommended 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week when I struugle to walk? At the moment I am having a break from statins to allow my body to recover

Is that no as in i don't want your drugs with their horrible side effects or is that no as in give me something that increases nitric oxide in my body so that my body can help heal itself .

To change the subject a bit, do you think that this plan to put all our medical records on a data base will show up the number of people in the real world (as opposed to clinical trials) having side effects from statins?

My husband and I are removing ourselves from the data base (got form from doctors) as he is highly suspicious that someone will hack into site and sell details to Insurance companies etc!

I know what you mean Deepblue, this selling on of our information is worrying.

I have given this a lot of thought and have reluctantly accepted that the benefits probably outweigh the risks. Apparently hospitals have been giving this information for years and this has helped to reveal scandals such as Mid Staffs and Bristol Children's Hospital, although this was also due to some pretty heroic whistle blowers as well. I am thinking of the anaesthetist in Bristol who couldn't get a job in the NHS after he "whistle blew" and all those relatives' groups who fought on.
