I had a pacemaker fitted following years of AF and 4 ablations. I was kept in hospital for an extra day as there was substantial swelling over the wound. I was then discharged with additional compression bandaging around my chest. A week or so later while resting at home, and having removed the compression bandage as advised, I felt a pulsing lump at the wound site and advised my wife to call our local hospital A&E for advice. They suggested that I visit A&E for them to check it out, but as I was getting ready to go, my wound stitches burst open and I was bleeding profusely. My wife stemmed the blood flow with a towel and called 999. An ambulance quickly arrived and I was bandaged up and taken to A&E.It turned out that I had a haemotoma from the pacemaker implant op and the recommendation was a further op to remove the haemotoma and seal and clean out the wound so that the pacemaker could be replaced, and this was then carried out at a later date.
