Palpitations when standing up

Hi all,

I am a 51 year old bloke and had a successful ablation for AV node reentry tachycardia in 1996 but a couple of years ago I started getting long runs of ectopics. In brief I had a loop recorder fitted and a recent failed ablation for atrial tachycardia (couldn’t locate pathway). Since then I often notice my heart starts pounding for a short while when I stand up, feels weird. Not had this before and wondered if anyone else has a similar story. I take 2x100 Flecainide a day to manage all the ectopics (this works quite well). Frustrated!

Hi James, when we stand up our blood pressure raises and the heart pumps harder in order to get blood up to our brain. This is an awful thing to say (makes us feel old), but do you stand up slowly? If not then like a lot of other forum members you may have to do that in order not to aggravate your heart.

Perhaps have a word with you GP if it continues.

Hi James, I hope you are well. I got diagnosed with SVT a year and a half ago and just had an ablation a couple of weeks ago. I have been experiencing the same issue - my heart rate goes from 70 or 80 bpm to 140-150 bpm when standing up from a lying position. It's very uncomfortable and I feel extremely dizzy afterwards. Did this resolve for you? How have you been feeling?

Hi Ling,

I think the pills I was taking lowered my blood pressure and that’s why it was pounding when I stood up. Still happens sometimes but not too bad. I would ask your cardiologist. Are you still taking any pills?

Good luck with it all,

James

Hi James,

Thank you for your response! No, I stopped my pills for the arrhythmia 2 and a half weeks ago, a few days before I had the ablation. I'm hoping it's just my body getting used to being without them, plus the healing from the ablation. Hope all is well with you!

Best wishes,

Elli

Hi Elli,

I had an ablation in 1996 and it took a while for it all to settle down.

Good luck,

James
