I need help

I'm 26 years old. I'm a smoker. I'm trying to quit. My problem is rapid heart beat after I eat or whenever I get up too fast or do anything pretty much.. When I stand up sometimes my heart races to where I have to sit down or else it feels like my heart will explode. My other problem is that my heart races after I eat. I suffer from skipped heart beats as well. I'm just so scared my heart is going to stop soon... I feel like my chest just always feels strange :( Is 26 old enough to have heart failure???

Hey I’m 23 Years old and have the same symptoms although I had a SVT ablation 5 months ago I think mine is due to that although I’m not sure. You should probably see a doctor as soon as you can just to make sure everything is okay

Hello Lindsey

I had rapid heart beats when I eat then I found out that I have a hiatus hernia. The heart racing is where the electric in the heart have to many firing which causes it to race away, it causes no harm. I had it for several year before I had an operation that has improved it a lot. I had to sit when my heart races away without me, I made it my friend in the end and learned the signs of when it would happen as best as I could. Try and relax when it happens it can help to ease it off quicker, easier said than done at time, but all you can do it let it happen and relax after..

I'm pretty sure your heart isn't going to stop. although speak to a doctor to check for sure. heart reaction to food/indigestion and indeed movement after resting may ask be related to the vegus nerve. I suffer afib due to this on occasion. look up palpatations vegus nerve on google. it may be related. hopefully it calms down I wouldn't worry too much but would see my doctor to be safe

For your body to process all the toxins from those cigarettes will have seriously depleted your body's supplies of vitamins and minerals, but especially magnesium. I suggest you buy a good multi-vitamin-and-mineral supplement from a health food shop, and take it until at least three months after you manage to stop smoking.

Also eat/drink as little coffee, tea and chocolate as possible as caffeine may be making the symptoms worse.

Search on the AFA website for details of taking extra magnesium (but don't take it if you have kidney problems - check with your doctor). It may well help to decrease your symptoms.

Many people find it better to stop drinking alcohol. Eat as healthily as possible, eg avoid products with added sugar, monosodium glutamate, aspartame, and processed food generally. Also address any other health issues. There are lots of things you can do to help yourself, and this is not normally fatal, but you have to learn to manage it eg. by following the suggestions here (and getting your doctor's help). Hope this gives you some pointers.

Search POTS sounds like what you are describing to me 👍

Hello, you mention that your heart goes much faster when you stand. Have you measured your heart rate resting and then standing? What is the difference? Also, do you notice any colour changes in your legs when you stand?

If you prefer, you can send me an inbox through Health Unlocked or email me - r.harris@heartrhythmalliance.org

Best wishes

I’m with you on this one recently I’ve bern having a lot short sharp af’s not lasting long at all but HR elevates even in my sleep to over 109bpm (according to my Apple Watch) I too experience rapid HR upon standing after I’ve sat say for 1/2 - 3/4 if an hour and boy does it go fast. I’m used to gradually getting up slow as 12 yes ago I had a pacemaker fitted due to BP lowering upon standing and I had a lot of syncope. It seems now my heart is doing the exact opposite to what it was it was extremely slow and low and now although HR drops at times its mainly in low to high 100! I can’t get my head round it either. I have an EP had a 5 Day tape it showed I was in NSR throughout!! He needs to find AF trigger as I’m down to have an ablation

But I must admit the fast HR upon standing is worrying me too it’s complete opposite to what I was. I just try to stay calm if I feel dizzy I just sit back down again let it pass and try again. Sometimes I feel sick with the fast HR one day this week it went 168bpm and that hurt!!

I have lost 3 stone 4 1/2lb in the past 2 years I’m on slimming world so I’m eating very healthily I don’t smoke or partake of alcohol to me it remains a mystery but one day I hope to get some answers it just takes time

Ride the storm when this happens but always make contact with your GP/cardiologist if ever in doubt and go to A &E if it last more than a few mins

I wish you well and hope you get sorted soon
