Hi all, well I'm new here... I'm having a ICD device fitted in the morning... Pretty terrified! Hoping the somebody out there can offer a few world of wisdom to help aid me a restful sleep. I am also worried about it's appearance as am a petite 5'4, a size 8 and just 36 yoa (call me vane, I don't know?!) but i'm really struggling after seeing the size of the device during my pre op yesterday. Anyway, would be great to speak to someone in the know. Wish me luck!

Good luck will be thinking and praying for you!!!! It's normal to worry and to have the thoughts you are having but remember the reason you are having this surgery, to improve your quality of life.

My thoughts will be with you today, sending you a massive hug and lots of love!!! Xx

Don't worry too much, you will be fine, I had mine fitted last year and apart from a raised area on top part of my chest the scarring has faded and is barely noticeable.

You will have slight pain afterwards in your arm and shoulder but that will go with paracetamol. Just take it easy for a few days and don't put too much weight through your arm or lift it above your head for a few weeks.

Let us know how you get on.

Virtual hugs to you xx

I had mine implanted 4 years ago and it sure is a necessary lifesaver! You will see as time goes by that your EP would never do this if it weren't something of a "MUST DO!" Be glad that your doc cares enough for you to do this and don't worry, this will go well, you can get lots of rest afterward and you don't have to leave if you don't feel like it! Just like everyone said, follow doctor's orders and don't raise up your arm or lift anything! When it's done it's done! You'll be glad! And congratulations for joining the club! Cheers! Hugs to you from Chicago!

I had mine fitted 2 years ago to replace a pacemaker. After feeling initially vulnerable as I live alone I now have my trusty monitor connected to my broadband and carry a Mind me so I can continue to walk and go places alone. I am back at work and have a relatively active life exercising more than before. Hope the insertion went ok take it easy for a few weeks on the lifting font.

Hi all. Well I'm all done and home. The medical team were very pleased with how it went. Feel pretty silly however...I was very Divaesque and emotional on the lead up to having my procedure... Wasn't taken down to theatre till 4pm and by that time I had contemplated walking out about 6 times (Crazy, I know!!) Anyway, the surgeon came with my consent form for signing. I read the reason for my op "prevention of sudden death" in capital letters (A sharp reminder!) I sorted my head out from then on. (PLEASE KNOW THAT I AM VERY GREATFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY OF A BETTER LIFE.) Two days on, I am still feeling very restricted in my movements, I'm in a bit of pain and I really can't shift this bellowing feeling of uncertainty I have over me, but I guess everyone feels the same and its only to be expected. On the plus side I'm already noticing the benefits... I can now take a deep breath and it doesn't feel tight or restricted. I can hear my heart beet for the first time in a long time at a normal pace and that just wows me...

I have come to reolise that from the medical team, to a patient named Hillary in the next hospital bed, to the ICD communitys and online care and support (you guys!) I am not alone in this. Thank you.

I was in denial for a long time. I feel if I had joined on online forum, (like yourself), gained some understanding of what was about to happen to me rather than wait until the pre op it would have helped. I was truly terrified and somewhat hysterical right up till the final hour. Now, 4 days post op and I'm doing OK. I have a holiday to look forward to in just 4 weeks from now - Life goes on 😊 My advise would be to ask all the questions you need, no matter how silly they may sound at the time and stay 'in the know' Best of luck
