Could this be true about Hennah?

I dont understand how the tattoo could make someone so sick?

We do this at home and my children do this so it is a bit frightening to read this.

Black Henna is outlawed in UK for this reason but still exists in some Tattoo and hair dyes, it is only the black Henna not the brown one, you need to check as their have been hundreds of cases hennapage.com/henna/ppd/

I heard this many years ago - I won't let my kids have any henna tattoos - just in case!

I'm afraid it is true and the full effects of using black henna may lie dormant for many years. Stop using it now you know the risks.

So-called ‘black henna’ temporary tattoos usually contain PPD. EU law prohibits PPD to be used directly on the skin in this way because of the risk to health. There have been cases where temporary tattoos containing PPD have caused skin damage. In addition, their use may sensitise you to PPD. Sensitisation is the process by which someone becomes allergic to a substance or food. Once you have been sensitised, you are likely to have an allergic reaction to PPD when you have your hair coloured. The message here is, if you have ever used a ‘black henna’ tattoo; consider the possibility that you may be allergic to PPD.

See the Anaphylaxis Campaign's website for more information on allergic reactions to hair dyes:

it is true my niece had her hair dyed by a 'friend' who didn't do a test to see if the dye was ok for her and it ended in my niece being blue lighted to hospital in full Anaphylaxis, she nearly died her heart actually stopped she now has to carry an eppy pen with her at all times henna especially black henna is a really dangerous sustance my niece was very lucky!! better safe than sorry just stay away I say it's not worth the risk.

I'm a henna artist and black henna is different from natural henna. No one should ever used black henna as it can cause severe allergic reactions and is completely different to natural henna as it contains PPD and the henna stain comes out a very dark black whereas natural henna stains a brown/orange colour. As long as you are using natural henna your children should be fine and you can ask whoever is selling you the henna if it is natural. Sometimes in natural henna extra things are added to make the stain darker and last longer but these are all natural too and completely safe - lemon juice is often added because the stain gets darker and lasts for a few more days. However, you can get an allergic reaction to natural henna but if that happens then stop using it! I don't understand why that woman kept using her hair dye if she knew she was allergic but each to their own I guess. And always follow the safety instructions on hair dyes even if you have used the dye a million times before - the instructions are there for a reason.

Hi, it is particularly the black henna that causes this awful reaction. You can do a Google search for info. I found this site that explains it.

PPD in Henna tattoos isn't Henna, it's a chemical substitute that's used in commercial hair dyes. I use 'black henna' on my hair (from Lush) and it's natural indigo dye which is made from a plant. PPD can cause severe allergic reactions.

Here's an explanation of the difference.
