My red gooseberry bush

โ€ข40 Replies

Hi everyone,

This is another gooseberry bush I planted this one is on a 90cm stem for ease of picking and I love standard bushes and trees anyway.

This is a Hinnonmaki red and I'm very much looking forward to sampling them as they are nearly ready to pick. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Hidden

That gooseberry bush looks great, and I know you'll enjoy harvesting the fruits and making some lovely things with them.

They look as though they will be lovely and sweet Jerry, good to eat just as they are. ๐Ÿ™‚

in reply to Rachmaninov2

Hey I hope so Rach, as I'm really looking forward to them and this loveely hot sunshine is doing the trick ripening them. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Yes, the sun will ripen them and make them sweet. I remember picking ours when they had a red tinge to them many years ago, they would burst open if they became overripe and the birds would eat them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Same here R, I remember that too. xx

The overripe ones never got wasted springcross. More happy memories for us. I hope youโ€™re coping with this heat. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ‰โ„๏ธ

Very true R, no waste then was there and yes, great memories. My sister and I used to sit on the back doorstep and top and tail them and the blackcurrants (eating them as we went ๐Ÿ˜‚). I don't like this heat one bit, I stay inside unless pegging out and taking in washing, with the blind almost down and the fan on thinking where would we be without fans now!! How are you coping with it? Your emoji of the water melon reminds me there is some in the fridge for this afternoon. xx

Those blackcurrants๐Ÿ˜  they were so fiddly. We wouldnโ€™t be able to top and tail them now would we. My dad would make jam with the gooseberries and blackcurrants, and blackcurrant pies. Youโ€™re right, Iโ€™ve got three fans going at the moment. Once Iโ€™ve given the birds their food and water Iโ€™m staying indoors, blinds down, curtains drawn and windows closed. That chilled watermelon will be ideal this afternoon, I think Iโ€™ll get some. Thank you for the idea. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

My mum used to use them for jams and pies too and she would always keep a few jars of jam for a few years as it seemed to improve the longer she kept them. xx

Yes I agree. I was just thinking about my dads pastry, he would add ground almonds to the flour which gave the pastry an extra crunch. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿฅง๐Ÿ˜‹

springcross profile image
springcross in reply to Rachmaninov2

It sounds like the ground almonds would have given a better flavour to the pastry too. I love almonds and have done since I can remember. I started making my own almond milk a couple of years ago as I am a bit intolerant to dairy milk but it had the same effect on me which was a great shame, as it has a lovely flavour and has no additives in it. xx

I canโ€™t make pastry like my dad did. I love almonds as well, I always put some ground almonds in my porridge. It is a pity that you canโ€™t tolerate almond milk, especially as you were able to make your own. I always use it instead of dairy milk, and Iโ€™ve just started using almond butter instead of peanut butter. Just almonds, nothing else added. ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks good. I enjoy gooseberries but had to have my best one dug out at the end of last year as it was getting to big. I love soft fruits and especially raspberries and they all seem to be ripening at once.

Picture of soft frit bushes.
