Coconuts πŸ‘

I was very excited about a month ago when my young coconut tree that I planted 3 years ago had its first flowers on it, its was about 3 years old when I bought it and it really has grown tremendously well, despite endlessly getting attacked by the horrible rhino bug.

I took the photo yesterday morning when it opened up overnight, it's got 5 coconuts on it, and it's the start of many many more to come. The other older coconut tree that I have left in the garden can produce well over a 100 a year. The variety is called Hom in Thailand, meaning fragrant.. the water is sweet and fragrant, best when the coconut is still green and chilled. The inside is soft and can be eaten with a spoon.

Just thought I'd share this with you, hope you like it 😊

That's amazing! I didn't know coconut trees produced that many. What do you do with 100 coconuts?

Happyman4 profile image

100 coconuts is not very much when you have 4 kids that love them when they are still green/young, We leave some to get old and and let them start to sprout and open them open to eat the creamy sponge inside. Some we use for cooking, even made a bit of oil. But the most we drink the water and eat the meat while its still like a jelly.

We still buy coconuts every now and then, it's a very lovely drink when cold.😊

Do you/can you eat the outer fruit?

We only ever get the older type here, although I've found a fresher kind that has more coconut water in it before. It's delicious :)

No we don't eat that very hard brown bit that separates the white fruit from the shell. I cut it of when I take the fruit out the shell.

When we great the fruit while its still in the shell, we try to avoid scrapping that bit with it, only because of looks really..it's easy when you get used to itπŸ™‚

I used to have 8, some I cut down because of the damage the rhino bug done to them and some I cut down because the were the wrong variety and got to big for the garden. Am very happy with just the 2 now and I can look after them better. 😊

It really must be. Something we could never have here in the UK πŸ˜•

Lucky you Happyman, I love coconut and always have. 😊

I love them to, the coconut tree was the first thing I bought when I first bought the house 7 years ago..😊

I remember when I was a little girl my dad cracking the coconuts with a hammer! I could barely wait for it to be opened. πŸ˜‹

My kids are like that now, πŸ™‚ can hardly open them quick enough for them. 😊

I used to like to poke a skewer into the little soft bits and shake out the "milk" πŸ˜œπŸ˜‹

springcross profile image

Yes, we used to do that, there were three little black patches and one of them was easier than the other two - we used to use my mum's kitchen skewers. Good memories. πŸ˜‹πŸ˜Š

No, I never had any interest in football at all other when there was a the world cup being played. Funny though I was in my school football team and I was good at it..but I was good in all sports as a boy, running, boxing, swimming. Cricket..those were the days.

Hi Happyman4, This is wonderful you have a coconut tree in your backyard and they are giving many fruits. πŸ˜πŸ‘

I love coconut juice and many products from coconut. πŸ˜‹

Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

It is wonderful, I love them. Really happy that this one has finally started to produce and it's got some on there. I bought 40 young coconut trees 4 years ago for my wife's dad to start his new farm, they started flowering this year but are not keeping any on yet, but they will, hopefully he will send us a few when they doπŸ‘πŸ˜

I’m sure that’s very fair to have a few from 40 young coconut trees you gifted him! πŸ˜πŸ‘Okay there’s another kind of coconut fruit tree if you tried before called Toddy palm, Palmyrah, Wine palm or Fan palm. They are very interesting looking fruits and taste delicious that I eat the meat! πŸ˜‹πŸ‘πŸ‘

I do love Toddy when they turn to start to sprout, same as the coconut when they start to sprout, I don't like the toddy when they are like jelly. I will cut one coconut tomorrow that is sprouting, I have quite a few saved for eating like that..so lovely πŸ™‚I have seen all the palms you mentioned when I go for a walk along the beach road, pattaya. I think there's about 10 different varieties of palm trees on that road.

I will look up some of their names. their all very beautiful. πŸ™‚

Yes they are so beautiful and delicious at the same time. We made desserts out of their fruits back then. πŸ˜‹πŸ‘I’m going to look out for your coconut fruit opened post! πŸ˜πŸ‘

Will try and fit it in today πŸ™‚

Thats awesome, I did not realise a coconut tree could produce 100 coconuts a year either.

I bet they taste delicous 😁

They are very tasty πŸ™‚ the variety is known as fragrant coconuts in Thailand.I am very happy that it's now started to produce fruits..hopefully in about 6 months or so it will start to produce to it's full glory 😊
