Sugar Free Challenge - Thursday

We've reached day 4! I'm hoping things are going to be getting a bit easier for everyone now :)

I thought today might be a good day to talk about sleep. There's two reasons I want to mention sleep this week:

1) If we don't get enough sleep, we tend to crave easy energy, and easy energy for me = sugar.

2) Too much sugar in our diets can interfere with our sleep quality, especially if we eat too much sugar before bedtime. Not only can it keep us awake later than necessary, but when our body is done processing it, the sugar crash can wake us up and keep us awake for a little while. It's a vicious cycle.

Guidance says we should aim for about 8 hours a night. It helps to make sure your room is fully dark and cool enough to sleep in. I'm curious if anyone is finding they're already sleeping a bit better?

P.S. feel free to ask any non-topic related questions below and/or post photos of meals to inspire us - the discussion doesn't have to stay on topic if you don't want it to :)

It is so interesting that you have linked quality of sleep and sugar consumption. I have been interested in sugar free since 2011 and have done a lot of research into sugar and metabolic syndrome. I think this ties in significantly with sleep. However I suffered workplace bullying for being sugar free followed by some difficult health conditions and as an emotional response I ended up eating sugar again. Madness! It is so refreshing to know there are people out there that are questioning the impact of sugar on our health. Thank you for getting us all thinking about sugar 👍

I've cut out sugar in the past, but I know what you mean, it makes you feel quite self-conscious at times. Then a holiday or Christmas come along...

I'm glad it's been useful :)

Its more than useful, its crucial. I can't recommend highly enough the work of Professor Robert Lustig. I understand low carb and we definitely should not fear natural fats. However no one talks about fructose. Many people who totally avoid alcohol would be shocked to realise that when they eat sugar( glucose and fructose) they are ingesting a molecule that will rapidy break down into glucose and fructose. Both will enter the blood steam but fructose will enter the blood and go to the brain and activate the reward system It will then go to the liver and follow a similar metabolic pathway to alcohol. Time to say no to sugar and don't get bogged down with the whole carbohydrates keto debate. Its simple eat no processed food and completely avoid sucrose and high fructose corn syrup . My biochemistry knowledge is good x

Interesting reads, especially about excess sugar creating inflammation which then disturbs sleep. I can’t tell if I’m affected - my sleep has been disturbed by hot flushes on and off for the last 4 years thanks to perimenopause which would mask anything more subtle!

I'm glad it's been interesting :)

There are lots of other things that impact on sleep, it can be hard to tell. Especially with the last year. Hopefully the perimenopause flushes won't last much longer for you.

How about, cutting it up into slices, wrapping the slices up etc and freezing them. If someone visits, you can offer them a slice of cake ( I find cake slices defrost fairly quickly)

This is a difficult one Minah, as there's no easy answer to give.

I think I would have a think about why you were tempted by the carrot cake. Was it a cafe with lots of tempting cakes, was it an event, or were you in a restaurant?

How often do you tend to do this? Is it a regular thing, or is it a once in a blue moon thing? If it's once in a blue moon, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Consider your feelings when you ate the cake. Did you feel guilty? Or did you take the time to enjoy your cake, savour the taste and get the most out of it?

Honestly, my goal with this challenge isn't to persuade you to never touch sugar again, it's just an opportunity to rethink your habits and consider whether you want to have as much in your diet. If you really do want a cake, just consider why you really want the cake, but make sure you enjoy the cake when you do have it!

That is a hard situation, as it's even harder to turn down something like that because it feels impolite.

Maybe prepare yourself with an polite compliment and an excuse for if this happens in future.

I've told my partner not to bring home sweet things as a surprise for me, I've given him other suggestions (like olives or raspberries) and he only gives me chocolate at Christmas now.

A good suggestion I saw the other day was for your hubby to put his sweets in a tin marked with his name, so that it makes it clearer to you that it's his, not yours.

I think you are addicted to sugar. If you are, then this is not a simple question. It's like saying you drank wine despite trying to give it up, and took another bottle home that you cannot resist. It will be a journey to overcome.

Watch this, and see if it applies to you

After watching it last year, I became convinced that sugar addiction is real (and that I didn't have it, I was just a problem user). Watch it and see what you think.

If you can, take the cake out of your fridge, and mash it into your rubbish bin so you can't eat it. It's not wasting food, that food is already wasted if you eat it or not.
