How is the coronavirus affecting you?

Hi everyone,

We are in a very strange situation that almost seems surreal as we have over 60 million residents and around 1200 cases in the UK and yet its shaken the nation as we know it's going to get worse.

This morning I nipped into my local town as we have a polpualtion of over 12K so have all the essential shops locally, I wanted to go in the hardware shop as I'm doing some painting and thought I'd nip up to the supermarket and buy some letuce I could not believe the queues and amount of people shopping and thought I had more chance of catching the virus so I changed my mind about wanting some lettuce.

This to me shows how some people are getitng ready to self isolate as I think that many people are very worried as we don't know what to expect.

I had pneumonia as a child which has scratched one of my lungs so I'm higher risk than some.

Please remember we are not alone on here so we can encouarge and help support one another because it has to be up to us to protect ourselves and each other to beat this. So you are not alone on here.

Soon we will be able to spend more time in our gardens too and virus' don't like UV rays. I love my garden and being outside in nice weather.

Please feel free to have your say as this is a very real threat and it's here now.

It is very worrying :(

The person my partner sits next to at work developed flu-like symptoms and called in sick on Thursday. I decided to call via the supermarket on my way home to get our weeks food shop, just in case we were quarantined, and it felt like Christmas time with the queues and trolley-loads.

We both had itchy throats on Friday, so per government advice, we're now shut-ins. Probably just hayfever, but we won't risk making others sick if not.

in reply to Cooper27

It is indeed, in my local hardware shop the lady owner was talking to a customer who was saying how scared she was and the owner said how vulnerable she felt which's understandable.

I've some elderly neighbours in their 70's so have told them that I will help them if I can.

You and your partenr are doing exactly whats right to protect yourselves and others as we are much more vulnerable if we are already weakened by a cold or bug,

I hope that you are both OK so take care and do let us know how you get on.

I went out for a little while yesterday afternoon to go shopping. Some of the lines were very long and was stretching around the‘corner’! I was glad it was just one item that I was getting for a friend of mine. I didn’t want to be there longer than I had to.

in reply to Activity2004

I don't blame you as you are higher risk with diabetes so you take care Leah. 😊

As everyone probably knows, here in Spain the whole country is in lockdown. Where possible we all have to stay at home. One person in household at a time can go out only for essentials such as food shopping, the pharmacy and the health centre. All public facilities closed -including educational establishments, day centres, sports facilities, theatres etc ,playgrounds beaches bars and restaurants. Local bus service has been suspended. An owner can walk the dog so long as stays 3m away from anyone else. Also allowed is visiting infirm relative. Anyone caught outside or driving somewhere without a valid reason can be fined 100 euros or more, with provision for prison sentences for flagrant breeches (not entirely clear what that would be)

We have no (known) cases here in Torrox so far, but people with second homes here have "escaped" previously imposed restrictions in Madrid and other cities by coming here - with resultant increase in risk for us locals.

Initially this state of emergency is in force for 15 days but can be extended.

I totally understand this but it's going to drive me nuts not being able to go out for daily walk of 5km plus. I have osteoarthritis and the remains of a Deep Vein Thrombosis and exercise is important for both. My yoga mat is locked up in local day centre, my house is small so can't do much except walk up and down stairs (which knees don't like much). However we all just have to manage as best we can.

This drastic action will probably be all be heading for the UK soon ..... take care folks! :)

Thank you for this cheritorrox it is very interesting and a taste of whats to come for us, I wish you all well and stay safe. 😊

We closed schools, Senior Centers, libraries, daycare centers for children, museums, etc. here in the USA, too.

Is that nationwide or decisions by individual states? Bet bars restaurants and junk food places are still open!

Governor of MD. decided this effectively since Friday.

in reply to cheritorrox

Hi Cherritorrox, thanks for posting about the situation in Spain.

You said "Where possible we all have to stay at home. One person in household at a time can go out only for essentials such as food shopping, the pharmacy and the health centre."

I think this is really important. I don't live in Europe but I have the impression that a lot of people there seem to think they're going to be imprisoned at home with no access to daily necessities. With proper planning, supermarkets can be kept stocked up and open every day (even if they cut the hours and number of people allowed in at one time).

I hope you can continue with some exercises at home. I've been doing gentle strength and stretching exercises at home, and it's been really useful for my physical health. Luckily I could go outside for a walk, but there was just nowhere to go :(

I know it's hard to stay at home, but it's a quicker way to reduce the number of those infected by the virus. In the last six weeks, things have improved dramatically around here. Things are getting back to normal.

Dear Jerry

Appreciate your concern.....

In a nation with 1300 million people , as of today we have only 108 cases, still my nation is shaken...

And with 60 million people , if 1200 affected....then naturally a concern....

Why ????

Look at the no of cases Italy had before 20 days and what is the status today??.... This explains why your nation is shaken.....

Let me explain bit further......

Covid19 transmission will have 4 stages :

Stage 1: Covid19 gets imported....

Stage 2: Covid19 local transmission from known source of imported virus...

Stage 3: Community acquired transmission where it is difficult to find the exact source of the virus.

Stage 4: Epidemic.....

Stage 1 is one when you got few cases known to have come from other affected countries.... And action must have started in quarantining....

When It reached stage 2, there should be stringent action....

From stage 2 to stage 3, it takes 3-4 weeks time.. ... Stringent measures can prevent from reaching to stage 3....

If it reaches stage 3, it may be difficult to control and there is every possibility of becoming epidemic...

Italy is in stage 4, in your country Covif19 is trying to travel from stage 2 to stage 3....

My nation- Covid19 is trying to reach from stage 1 to stage 2...

Every nation is worrying and trying hard to block their transmission at every stage...it all depends upon the health care infrastructure, resources, awareness, sincerity, and timely precautions, strict implementation of precautionary measures ....

People now appreciate prompt chinese measures by which they slowed down the virus travel from each stage and though more than 80k people affected, the mortality rate was low....less damage was done by the virus....due to the combined efforts of the Govt and it's people...though the Covid19 did travel from stage1 to stage 4.....their stage 1 must have come from some animals and birds which is not yet known....Only God knows ☹️

Now, please read how covid19 could travel from stage 1 to stage 4....👇

I can only say a few things and combinely we can fight against this unknown, invisible but very powerful animal ....

(1) Say no to Panic but yes to All precautions.

(2) Strict physical hygiene of hand washing,

(3) maintain social distancing-- 6 ft distance as per CDC ...even with your near and dear ones....

(4) Take nutritious and natural food

(5) Take all hot food .

(6) Expose your body to Noon sunlight as far as possible in your garden, roof top, balcony, back yard. .

(7)Stay at home....order everything online.

(8) keep sipping Hot /warm fluids ( within your tolerable limit) throughout the whole day every two Hours with a target 2-3 litres per day.. .. the hot fluid could be in form of tea, coffee, Tomato soup/ clear Vegetable soup with ginger, garlic , spring onion, Pepper add ons ...plain warm water with litte salt , pepper, lemon, honey, ....

This kind of virus prefer to thrive in the mouth and throat.....with this warm fluid, you are flashing the virus from your mouth and throat down to your stomach... and in stomach you have Hydrochloric acid which would kill the virus..

👍👍🙏

A late reply, but just to say that you cannot flush the virus down your throat with liquid. It goes into your respiratory tract.

Hi Jerry

A very good post I must say and yes it's very worrying now as it just keeps on spreading. I'm hoping that by the measures being taken by countries i.e. no travelling between countries that it'll eventually stop the spread. As you say it'll be better once it gets warmer as flu viruses don't like the heat or they don't seem to like it.

I'm a healthy person so I'd be fine but my hubby wouldn't as he has asthma and was born with it and also our youngest granddaughter is immune suppressed as she's on chemo drugs for JIA.

I'm sorry that you are also at risk if you catch it so agree with you, best to stick to the local shops if you are able to. If it gets too bad I'll do my shopping online but know it'll take a long time as more and more people will be doing that.

I really hope that we eradicate this disease as soon as possible and we continue to take the measures needed.

Take care all.

Alicia

in reply to

Thank you Alicia, my immune system is a bit twitchy so is not supressed and I am very fit and healthy considering so know that I am in a much better siutaion than many others.

I hope that your family is OK throughout this and you all take care now.

in reply to

You certainly sound very fit Jerry, it's all that delicious healthy food you cook.

Thank you and you stay safe as well. Here's to it being over quicker than they think.

Great job! :-)

Thanks again for another great post, Jerry. I have to disagree with you though on the notion that this virus doesn't like UV rays. Look at Singapore, India, Iran. It's quite hot and humid there. They haven't been spared.

in reply to

That's a fair comment Hidden it is what the Chief medical officer is saying, so with Spring here in the UK and the EU we will have to see. As I hope that they are right.

in reply to

I don't have a scientific background. I read it on the WHO website. Apparently, you can zap the virus with a UV lamp in a lab environment, but in the real world, the sun's rays don't have the intensity and duration to kill the virus.

who.int/emergencies/disease...

in reply to

They are using UV lamps in China to clean public transport, as we are in the Northern hemisphere the sun is getting stronger and people will want to be outside more so that will help as we have far less colds and flu in spring and summer here.

Please see:

nationalgeographic.co.uk/sc...

The truth is we don't know experts are goiung by past experiences of flu and cold virus'

I live in California, the governor here said the most simplest and most common sense thing “Buy what You Need”. That there is plenty of food inventory it’s just that people are hoarding mor thanthey need. I couldn’t agree with him more That’s the way I shop and most others. The hoarders are forcing our hands to do the same as we’re afraid we can’t get what we Need which is All I want. I admit I’ve bought more Sanitizer than I needed, but I gave some away to seniors that I know who couldn’t find any, we’re the Highest at Risk. I’m pretty much self isolating myself besides being a senior I have underlying health conditions. I lay here alone sometimes I’m I going to Die? This makes my Anxiety go up to where I’m not eating as much as I should, which I know is counter productive. So trying to Not watch the news as much it’s OverKill. Just give the facts then SHUT UP 🤐

Hi it is very scary times we are living in, I am a foster carer and am now home with 2 of the boys both with coughs trying to explain to them without scaring them. My grown up daughter went shopping for her family on Sunday, she rang me and told me it’s crazy out there food running out of basics and so busy like Christmas but quiet.

As soon as these boys are ok I will be offering my help for people in the local area . I live in Bristol.

Stay safe everyone

Hello Dietwoman I hope that your 2 boys are fine and recover very soon. I was in Bristol last Friday and it was very quiet the roads were also very quiet as the M4/M5 pinch point was free flowing which for a Friday afternoon is very unusual.

My local supermarket was packed like on Christmass eve so I didnt bother as I only wanted a lettuce and normally Sunday morning is very queit in there.

I second your sentiment please stay safe everyone.

Hi Jerry, when I was born I was exposed

to whooping cough. When 10 days old turned blue, mother looked at me and threw me and ran off screaming. They used to say a neighbor came over and gave me CPR, probably not what happened.I had 2 hernias, thought I was born with them but then I read how whooping cough causes this in infants. I can`t remeber this but as a child if you ducked my head under water I would try to claw your eyes out. This tells me that sub-consciously I remember suffocating. I don`t know if I have scared lungs but they seam OK. If my mother threw me then that was probably what started me breathing again! This happened may years ago because I am 72 now. Getting ready for the Corna Virius. We don`t know how widespread it is because this man in the Whitehouse turned down the test when the WHO offered it. This man is a walking disaster area.

in reply to GERALDDAVID

Well you take care and look after yourself GERALDDAVID and as you rightly say we don't know how widespread it's going to be. So you look after yourself and you are only a clcik away from support on here.

Hey thanks Hidden I don't have trouble with my lung unless I get an infection so don't need any meds unless I get a virus. So it is minor compaerd tp many others issues.

Thanks for sendong the poster to Leah we appreciate all the info that we can collate from around the world. 👍

Hello.....bit late replying.....managed to get back on one of the last flights from Cyprus holiday.....they locked down strictly before uk. On my return.....Just caught the panic buying phase and now it’s calmer and organised more in my little job in Tesco. My mojo has fled since lockdown so little hope of losing the 6lb I gained on holiday 🐷. O well will just carry on enjoying my acres of free flowers and plants as nobody is buying and hoping no shoppers pass this virus on to me. 🦠😷

Hi there. I was abroad when my employer contacted me to telle me I was layoff. Then all my friends wrote something to me about getting back to the country as sois as possible.

Well, when the prime minister of Québec decided to declare the sanitary emergency, I had two more days to come back from Mérida. So I decided to get the most I could of my vacations.

The return went well but there was slot of people in the plane wearing masks and desinfecting their seat with wipes. At the end of our plane trip from Mexico to Montreal there was no more water in the sinks of the plane.

Tomorrow, I’ll finish my 14 days quarantine period and after... Well... after I’ll stay home because I have a chronic disease.

I just do as the government say... stay inside, doing some stuff I really like... and I really like being lazy so it fits me well. I’ll work around the house, clean the courtyard etc. Watching a lot of movies and series and listening to music. Cooking a lot!

I was happy to have all those canned meals when I got back from Mexico!

I don’t feel stressed at all. I simply take thing as they come over.... and life is good!

Regards
