Top Health food trends of 2020

β€’10 Replies

Hi everyone,

I read this and thought we've had oat milk and plant based burgers on the forums for some time and that shows the membership is indeed food orientated, my specialist subject is stating the obvious. LOL

My prediction is that fast breakfast food will be on the fast food eateries menus with a vegan full English breakfast and this isn't necessarily a healthy food trend.

So here's an article with the top 6 predictions for 2020 food wise:

goodhousekeeping.com/health...

I also think that mental health seems to be at an all time low, we as societies are very divided over one thing or another and it's time to say enough is enough and become mindful of how we think and behave and thats my hope that we will be more mindful of one another and their needs. One searching question we in the developed nations want to think about is why do we have walls to keep poverty out...when we are wasting millions of tons of food.

The photo is the one Leah posted as a banner which HU have now kindly made high resolution (HU πŸ‘) so here's the original photo it seems quite apt. 😊

Its a disgrace in this country how much food that could have been used again gets thrown in the bin by catering establishments when there's so many starving!

Hi Hidden

I hope to read that article later, and see what the top 6 predictions for 2020 food will be. In the meantime, I wanted to comment that I love the fruit and veg banner - it's a great photo.

Zest :-)

Exactly Hidden thats why I posted the link to the article because it's how new must have processed foods are portrayed as healthy foods because they in demand.

Exactly, Hidden ≧◉α΄₯◉≦. !!

If we make it πŸ” ourself ( healthunlocked.com/healthye... ), we know precisely what ingredients are in it. πŸ‘πŸ‘

(No surprises 🚫 😯 , no costly expense πŸš«πŸ’°β€¦ .)

And, we can tweak ingredients to suit our particular dietary needs & tastebuds πŸ‘… πŸ˜‹ .

We can even prep a large batch, freeze πŸ₯Ά ❄️ the extra, then thaw & cook πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ ♨️ as desired.

A win, win, win all round!! πŸ€—

Hi Jerry

Very interesting article and there was another link within the article about plant milks, think I'll be having a go at peanut milk.

I also looked at the link that Hidden shared and I've never eaten a Beyond Meat burger as a lot of plant based foods contain pea protein which I react to, I have IBS and it upsets my tummy. Now I've read that article as well I'm so pleased I make all my own food, the only thing I buy are plant milks.

You made a 'pattie' Jerry a few months back where you used grated potatoes and you used honest, decent ingredients, I've yet to make those but I will soon, I'm just ensuring everything I make is low fodmap at present. I made some Quinoa cakes, little patties, a few days ago and froze them, they taste lovely. If anything this diet has taught me to broaden my horizons and make different food and have a more varied diet.

in reply to

Thanks Alicia, good luck with pea nut milk as you have your own device so am sure it will be perfect.

The patties are latkes if you want to find a vegan FODMAP recipe. Being diagnosed a coeliac seemed very restrictive at first then I started to look at all the naturally gluten free foods from other cultures I came across some amazing things so feel that I have a very varied diet as you will.

Jerry 😊

in reply to

Thank you Jerry, I love peanuts and peanut butter so I'm sure I'll love the milk.

The diet is going well and I'm not finding too bad at all, you just gave to rethink and it actually encourages you to make your own food.

Alicia😁

βœ… Highly processed, unhealthy, costly … β€œfaux meat" burgers πŸ” currently "in demand":

From healthunlocked.com/healthye...

”… As merely 2 samples of ingredients (oils) from 2 β€˜plant-based’ burgers:

. . . πŸ” Beyond Burger: Water, Pea Protein Isolate* (18%), Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flavouring, Smoke Flavouring, Stabilisers - Cellulose, Methylcellulose, Gum Arabic, Potato Starch, Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Salt, Sunflower Oil, Dried Yeast, Antioxidants - Ascorbic Acid, Acetic Acid, Colour - Beetroot Red, Modified Corn Starch, Apple Extract, Lemon Juice Concentrate, *Peas are Legumes ( tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p... ).

[Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil are the 3rd & 4th ingredient listed, respectively, & Sunflower Oil appears farther down the list. 😯 πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ ]

. . . πŸ” Impossible Burger: Water, Soy Protein Concentrate, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, 2% or less of: Potato Protein, Methylcellulose, Yeast Extract, Cultured Dextrose, Food Starch Modified, Soy Leghemoglobin, Salt, Soy Protein Isolate, Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Zinc Gluconate, Thiamine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Sodium Ascorbate (Vitamin C), Niacin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Vitamin B12. ( faq.impossiblefoods.com/hc/... ).

[Coconut Oil & Sunflower Oil are the 3rd & 4th ingredient listed, respectively. 😯 πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ ]

Yes, serving as short-term ’ transition’ foods, these faux meats πŸ” may serve a purpose of helping break long-term ’ food (meat) addictions’ for individuals trying to β€˜break an addictive cycle ♻️/ unwanted habit’.

Yet, consuming a routine, steady diet of these β€˜plant-based’ burgers (or faux meat substitutes), I suspect is problematic β€” particularly as you’ve noted, Matt2584, with health-damaging oils being an ingredient: Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil ☠️ ☠️ ☠️ . . . 😯 πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Perhaps these types of faux meats might be viewed as brief, temporary, bridging" to get over the hump of β€˜meat-withdrawal’? πŸ€”

But, a steady diet of these temporary bridging foods may be just as unhealthy as a steady diet of the β€˜animal meat’ they’re intended to imitate? πŸ€”

[Robbing Peter to pay Paul? πŸ€” . . . Re-arranging the deck chairs πŸ’Ί πŸ’Ί on the Titanic 🚒 ? . . . πŸ€” ]β€œ

.

βœ… Faux burgers πŸ” viewed as temporary (short-term) "transition food" ( healthunlocked.com/veganfoo... ) for people trying to wean off animal foods:

". . . However when many people go vegan they start with what I call transition foods. This might be a vegan burger, possibly one bought from a fast food chain. These are brilliant at reducing harm to animals, but cannot generally be described as healthy food options. These transtion food choices help you reduce dependency on meat, dairy, fish & eggs. But they should not be seen as an endpoint. . . . "

Hi Hidden , I think that your predictions are very astute and think that you will be proved right. 😊

Fully agree, Jerry, on the often overlooked mental health aspect of our time:

. . . ". . . mental health seems to be at an all time low . . ."

. . . . . as reflected in the divisive nature of public discourse.

The inextricable link πŸ”— between problematic physical & mental health is apparent ( youtube.com/channel/UCp_ShZ... ) β€” each influencing the other πŸ”„ .

Maybe a hearty dose of loving πŸ₯° , self-care β€” supportive personal relationships πŸ‘©β€β€οΈβ€πŸ‘¨ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ & cooperative community bondsπŸ‘«πŸ‘πŸ‘¬ ; hearty, nutritious β€˜real’ foods πŸ₯— 🍲 πŸ₯™ ; movement & de-stressing activities 🚢 🧘 🏊, etc. β€” all go towards improving our physical & mental health hand-in-hand 🀝 ?

Once we start feeling better (physically & mentally) β€” because we’re taking better care of ourselves β€” we become more conscious of (more mindful of) others well being? Thereby, divisive/ polarising behaviour subsides? πŸ€”πŸ’ . . . [Our focus/ energy shifts from our(previous) suffering & becomes more aware of β€” more mindful of β€” other’s sufferings on not only a local but global 🌍 🌏 🌎 scale.]

Thank you kindly for touching on this ’trend’, Jerry. It’s an important aspect of health & well-being to be aware of (& broached) in context of β€˜healthy eating’. Hoping 🀞it (’mass’ low/ poor mental health) is a β€˜ passing trend’ which will diminish in due time. 😌 πŸ™ πŸ€ 🌺 🌞
