Poor Diet Leading to Blindness

This story has been published on a handful of news sites today, regarding a 17 year old, who has turned blind as a result of poor diet (he would only eat white bread, ham, pringles, chips). I feel for him, he is said to be an extremely fussy eater who struggled to eat anything else.

I hope he can be given help to address the aversion to food textures, and that there is some hope his vision might be restored, but they don't give us any more on that.

I'm posting this to remind us to work on the variety in our diets :)

Edited to add another link: amp.theguardian.com/lifeand...

The mum has spoken anonymously, unfortunately she says the eyesight damage is irreversible.

Thanks Cooper27. I hate sugar. All my life I have had to eat the right things. Its hard at times, but I am pleased my parents were on the ball . From being 3 in 1966.

They say fussy eating is becoming more prevalent with children. I'm glad your parents worked hard to help you avoid hang-ups around food, and to hate sugar!

Hi Cooper, I saw this and thought how sad and I wish him well. 😊

Thank you for sharing the article. It definitely shows that what we eat does effect a person's health/vision. I hope the son does well. :-)

Hi Cooper27

Thanks, I read about this in the morning, and it was on my mind for quite a bit - there is another article here, that is also interesting - from The Telegraph:

I read that this morning, my heart really goes out to this young lad. It really is tragic.

When I was a teenager I ate a lot of sugar, it was my way of dealing with stress - I learnt the hard way, but nothing like this young lad

Very sad to read about this.

One of my friend’s granddaughters has this problem, even as an adult she struggles with food textures. It’s the kind of problem that is often associated with a great deal of anxiety. ARFID can be a really difficult condition to treat.

So very sad, made even more so as with the correct interventions it could have been avoided 😢

This sad story has attracted interest all over the world, especially in the USA, the capital of junk food. I'm so glad that the young man agreed for his doctors to tell his story 'to raise awareness', and so sad for him and his family. If only the doctors had realised sooner what his problem was, but they can't really be blamed. This is one of those conditions that normally only appears in parts of the world where people are starving, so they almost certainly had never seen a similar case before.

If his diet made him blind I am pretty sure it can be revered.

But it’s knowing what to eat that is key.

Their needs to be a lot more research into food because food can reverse or even prevent a lot of problems.

It seems from later articles that it's not reversible, it's resulted in swelling and scarring that can't be undone.

It's such a shame for the guy, he's so young :(
