My Deer neighbours helping cut the grass last night, 🦌

β€’26 Replies

Hi everyone,

This is a photo of the top of the adjoining land that I bought, it's where I intend to grow veg and fruit trees, there are a few Hazel nut trees already.

Last night I thought a face peeped in my window from my drive and then I saw these 3 happily munching the grass. They are wild animals and very nervous of humans, I can't think why...They heard me coming so I stayed far enough away not to frighten them. I've a photo of the dark Buck looking at me over my front garden wall and then sauntering off down the pavement back into the forest, he's obvious pavement savvy.

The photo is not very good quality as its with my phone and the sun was setting but they're an impressive trio all with a fantastic set of antlers and no doubt they're looking forward to having fruit trees.

That’s great, where are you located?

in reply to G1nny

Thanks G1nny , I live in a forest in Southern England UK and I live in their territory. 😊

The deer there are darker than the ones here in central Texas. Ours are white tailed deer but a bit further south we have mule deer that are darker and bigger. Have a great end of summer hope your weather is not as hot as here.

in reply to G1nny

Hey G1nny its cold here and we've had a months worth of rain today its been seriously wet and windy.

I think the white tailed deer sound interesting the lighter coloured ones have pale stripes.

What I really like is how the deer come and go and don't do any damage as they're fast and agile. 😊

We are on our 25th day of 100 degrees or higher with very little rain.

in reply to G1nny

Wow its been 65 here dropping to 55 in the night, which's nice for sleeping and that's the good news...😊

That’s great, we have large electric bills because air conditioning is a necessity. Enjoy your coolness.

How wonderful Jerry, What a treat. Three fine young males - bless them, Not long before rutting season and in June there might be some fawns 😁 They will love your fruit trees, probably partial to a hazlenut as well 😁 - the three deers picnic

in reply to Kitten-whiskers

Thank you Debs, it is a treat having wild life coming this close, 🦌 the stags like to frolic with the does in the long grass... the 3 deers picnic is very apt...😁

If you're going to grow things there? You might need to build a fence?

in reply to Want2BHappy3

Hi Want2BHappy3 I am having the land landscaped and the veg patch will be fenced off as the wild boar also come on the land and they can wipe out a veg patch over night, I try and live in harmony with nature and my wild neighbours.

The birds and squirrels love the hazel nuts and I won't putting netting on the trees either.

So thank you for your advice.

Wild board, Yikes! I've heard that they can be destructive? I hear what you say, your in their territory. Thought it was just deer?

in reply to Want2BHappy3

Hi Want2BHappy3 the boar come up my drive to get to my land and sometimes we meet on the drive and we all turn around and go the other way so are very respectful of one another. When I'm behind a boundary fence or wall they grunt to let me know they are there and we carry on as before. But they weigh 500+ lbs and protect their young and I am very aware of that, they are wonderful intelligent creatures.

They don't play, I saw a documentary where they took on lions and Won. Becarful

in reply to Want2BHappy3

Hi Want2BHappy3 , I'm sorry about the delay in replying, boars are very intelligent animals and are shy of humans and only attack if you get too close to their young. I tracked them into their territory and as soon as you get too close they let you know. But they will let you feed them.

I was in the forest and went to sit on a fallen tree and suddenly this boar woke up and looked at me, we were very close so I hid behind a tree we both pepped at each other once more and then he ran off.

I call them the local hooligans as they will wipe out a veg patch over night and have turned your fence into matchwood. They come by my cottage a few times every week as I live in their territory...

Bear hunters say that wild boar are more dangerous than a grisly bear but I don't hunt them.

That's ok Jerry, Board are very Scary and ugly looking. I'm ok with just seeing them at the zoo. πŸ™ƒ

What a great photo, I too live on the edge of this beautiful forest and appreciate all the wildlife we live with, although I'm weary of deer tics, I was bitten by a deer tic in Somerset and got Lymes disease from it, it's very uncomfortable and can't be cured so it's worth checking your clothing and skin after walking round your land.

in reply to zube-UK

Hi zube-UK thanks for the advice I am aware of Lymes disease so keep covered up especially around long grass where the ticks get knocked onto.

I'm sorry that you contracted Lymes disease.

Jerry 😊

Ah good, stay safe and dry! it's been wonderful for my runner beans and veg garden, I've also got moles on my grass, I love them and use the the little mounds they kindly leave to pot up plants and trees.

Your plot looks a good spot to grow veg, protected from wind.

Jerry saw this post late I feed my deer and have for years. Currently have the 3rd mother 2 of her fawns and one of her fawns has just joinned back up with her from last year. They chase the last year ones off while nursing their new young in most cases. I photo them all the time. My new Chesapeake Bay puppy now 6 months loves having them visit and does not disturb them while feeding. She sometimes follows me on walks it far to funny.

in reply to cherv

Hey cherv this sounds really funny and good to me that you keep deer, I'd love to see some photo's, often deer hang around the churchyard keeping the vegetation cut back and thats a great sight. 😊
