ACID REFLUX: Urgent advice needed on PPIs (Pantoprazole) for GERD - I am on 80mg per day for a year and still having problems!

My gastro consultant put me on 80mg Pantoprazole per day (40mg morning and 40 mg at night) plus 2x150 Ranitidine per day for acid reflux a year ago. I didn't question his wisdom but after reading some of the articles here, I am now very concerned and would like to hear from anyone else suffering from acid reflux (GERD) and on such a large dose of PPIs. Even though I have been takeking them for a year ( and other PPIs before that) I still get acid reflux. I do everything recommended to stop tyhe reflux but only get shoirt term respite. I am so used to the pain and discomfort, that I am beginning to think it is normal to have pain and discomfort. Kindest regards to everyone.

Have you talked to the doctor about the continuous pain? Did you get a list of what you’re allowed and not allowed to eat during the day?

HI 4optimistic

Welcome to the Healthy eating forum. I have put a link to a few articles within NHS Choices regarding 'acid reflux' that you might like to review - to see if any are helpful to you - but discussing things with your GP, or getting a second opinion could be something to consider - and Pharmacists can also be very helpful - to discuss things with as well:

Your gut biome is struggling and imo you need to get it sorted. Drugs from the doctor tend to mask the problems rather than fix them. I would check out gojimannutrition.com/ as a great resource. He goes through how to find what the exact gut problem is an how to fix it. This is done with case studies of people with problems, and perhaps one of those might be like yours.

Suggest you try WHOLE FOOD PLANT BASED NO OIL DIET. I have Barretts Oesophagus and take 20 mgm PPI, this diet helps a lot, many other testimonies on Forks over Knives website

I had this a number of years ago and it’s so painful I remember. The only thing I recommend you do is to eat non fibrous foods and eat very soft things (even mashed). No alcohol or acidic drinks and after eating take time for the food to settle - so relax. I found Gaviscon helped to settle the acid reflux. I think you may have strained a muscle which given gentle treatment will heal and strenghen, mine did. Also don’t lie down flat when you go to bed, prop up on pillows - this helps to stop the acid coming up into your throat and causing pain / Good luck!
